Okay. Most of you know I have a male Kennyi. (2inches). I am setting up a nice tank for my Kennyi. I am going to be providing many hiding places, purchasing four females at or around the same size as the male. I am setting up what I can afford for my kennyis. About an 80 Gallon, a fine/small gravel substrate, Not going with sand because they are diggers, and sand may clog the filters. I will be doing a nice flat rock formation and silicone it all together for support and safety reasons for the tank and fish... Will be lighty planted... I plan on this being done soon and I need to know if this is a good idea for my Kennyi tank. I would go bigger if I could.. But it would be better than the 32 gallon hell hole hes in now..

Here is a pic for the Idea.

sounds like a good set up to me. you will want to find a way to anchor the plants. i have ties the plants to rocks with fishing line before. that seemed to work well. i have also sewn the weights you get with plants to suction cups and stuck them to the bottom. this is my most prefered method.

is it going to be a kennyi only tank? or are you adding other species? what type of filtration are you using?

Yes it is Kennyis only. 1 Male and 4-5 females.. I don't know just yet what type of filtration I am going to using and I meant to ask what a good filtration setup would be. If you could give me some examples or info I'd appreciate it.

i prefer the magnum filters. they are a hot canister filter. normally with an mbuna tank you want to turn over the water 5.5 times an hour. with your tank understocked you could probably go as low as 4 times. when choosing a filter you want to make sure the gph (gallons per hour) will be adequate for your tank. simply multiply the amount of gallons of water in the tank x4 or 5.5. i also use powerheads with sponge attachments.

I have Emperor 400s on my tanks and sand and yes My Malawians are diggers But I have found that as long as you dont make the tube to close to the sand.. I have no problem with sand getting im my filter. Its trial and erro for each individual... But plants in a malawian tank.. good luck.. mine tear plants apart.. except for the few floating springs they have allowed to live for reasons unknown to me at this time.. hey that pic looks like a archeology dig.. wheres the fossil finds??? LOL just teasing..

lol. yeah. i thought the same thing. anyways. thanks for the help you too about the filtration... i should have this all complete in about a month... I'll get pics as soon as its all done...

Not going with sand because they are diggers

exactly the reason to give them sand ;)

if your worried about sand getting in the filter (although i don't have a prblem with it) you could maybe add a pre filter to the inlet. or use coral sand. coral sand is ideal and will also help buffer. its not as fine either and will not get clogged in your filter.

That looks good. I almost went that route. But went with holey rock instead. I still like yours. It reminds me of an aparment complex for fish. :kewlpics:
