My gourami is getting very thin. When I feed the fish it comes up to eat as though it is hungry and takes food in its mouth but then spits it all back out within a few seconds. It is as though it can not swallow. Any ideas on what could be wrong or how to treat??? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I've noticed this with some of my fish, gouramis included. This is not something to be concerned about they can swallow they just 'taste' food and if it isn't to their liking they will spit it out. It sounds like your fish would like something else to eat. Do you feed frozen blood worms occassionally? My fish find that hard to resist. Some granules are hard for fish to resist as well. What is it exactly you are feeding your fish? If its just flakes then they will get bored with it very quickly.
I hope this helps ;)

Definitely try feeding him something else and seeing if that fixes the problem. Ideas include Betta pellets (my Gouramis love them), frozen/live brine shrimp, frozen/live bloodworms, and frozen/live daphnia.

Thank you for replying. I have tried flakes, blood worms, brine shrimp, different kinds of floating pellets, krill, tubifex and any other kinds of food that i have around. It is the same thing with all of them.... spits them all out. I am going into the city today and will check to see if I can find something else that it might like. Any other suggestions?

i had this problem with my kribs, they would all grab at the food and then spit it out. the problem was a bacterial infection and their bellies became sunken.
i bought some flake food from dorsetdiscus that has stuff added to it. its not the same as medigold but has something along the lines of natural antibiotic properties but it came too late to help two of my kribs, but my others could eat it and they slowly got better.
of course it could be down to the infection going but to get them to eat is the main thing.
if you want to try it then i am willing to send you some to try so you dont go to the expense of buying it and it may not work. pm me your address and i will send some to you. :)

Thanks black angel. But I live in Canada are you sure you would want to send it all the way here?

canada is a bit far, maybe you can get something similar?

What exactly did you use? I'll see if I can find something similar here.

it doesnt have a brand name its just called medi flake and comes in a white container but i think the nearest would be medigold in canada which has antibiotics in it, but its only for goldfish. i have fed medigold to my tropicals and it didnt do any harm. up to you,but i cant think of any other medicated food.

Thank you very much. Will see if I can find some of that. Much appreciated.
