My Floval 125 Nearly All Done.

Thank you very much.Think the massive bit of bog wood in the middle really makes it. Yer as i said above have asked other people about them and they havent had any probs plus i watched him like a hawk for the 1st few days. lights on and lighs of (the girlfriend now thinks i have a problem)(even tho she loves him 2) He doesnt even seem to notice them but i will still be keeping my eye on him as he grows. I have been told that they only grow to a couple of inches (aprox 4) in size. So may be double what he is now. As he does get bigger tho he will be moved into his own tank, maybe with a girlfriend of his own.

Well i did some digging around and asked a few people and they have all said that they can be kept with fish as long and its planted and there is plenty to brake the line of sight. as for the basking area he can quite happily get up the large piece of bog wood and bask on top he is up the most the time when the lights are on. Right under the lights (he loves it)
I dont no what species of plant it is but it is defo aquatic and its doing quite well. lots of new shoots and leaves since planting it. really brightens up the for ground of the tank with its deep rich purple underside of the leaves.
Nice looking tank but I've got got some constructive criticism :).

Sorry to say you've been given very bad info.

As said, you definitely have a few non-aquatic plants in there (I can identify Hemigraphis exotica and I think I see Trichomanes javanicum - click the links), your turtle needs a proper basking area and you have been told its the wrong species.

You have a musk turtle not a soft shell (which would be even less suited to your tank anyway), and the fluorescent lights in there are not enough for basking, the temperature isn't high enough, you have no temperature gradient and really a larger basking area would be better. See here for a decent care guide: http://www.exotic-pets.co.uk/common-musk-turtle.html

You should get a proper basking spot bulb...the whole point of florescent bulbs is that they don't produce much heat compared to other types of lighting (thus saving energy), plus the turtle should have a temperature gradient so it can control its own temperature like it would in nature...a long fluorescent tube doesn't allow this even if it did produce enough heat.

Also, you should expect fish to go missing at some point in the future...just because its OK now doesn't mean it will always be, one snap from the turtle and you have a dead fish...and once it catches on that it can eat the fish...not a sensible risk to take IMO.

You would be better to re-home the turtle if you care about your fish, or take it back to the irresponsible store that sold it to you, at least then there's a chance someone will buy it and give it a proper turtle set-up.

Other than that, nice tank, but you need to do a lot more research before buying animals :).

Just read that bit again...

That's a very bad sign, and suggests your turtle is too cold.

Musk turtles should spend very little of their time basking, being mainly aquatic.

Please get that turtle some proper lighting ASAP before its too late!

Also, while I'm typing again, what are you feeding it on? Its very important it gets enough vitamin D3 and calcium (as well as other vitamins and minerals), especially since you don't have a UVB bulb (different from the basking bulb) for it.

love the tank alex and that bit of bog wood is great as a focus point :good: im not having a go fella but as three-fingers said maybe a rethink on that realy cute turt .i have 2 s.k.turts thay have a tank to them selvs but i do put them in my trop tank during the day but only after thay have been feed and the fish that thay are in whith are big .imo problems whith bad turtle care only show when its to late to corect them but good luck mate the tank as a hole looks great

That has really really shocked me. i got those plants from a fish shop back near my parents and it is a very reputable shop. really has shocked me. they will be coming right out after i press add reply.
As for Turbo i am going to take the advice of you lot and rehome him. Going down to the lfs i got him from to firstly get him his own tank + bits and bobs for it (i am thinking black sand and then secondly give them a piece of my mind.
He is fed every other day on a small portion of blood worm and turtle pellets.
Thanks for all the advice.

That has really pi**ed me of about those plants. any suggestions for some replacments people, I am going to do a bit of trimming from the back and replant some of the new shoots me thinks.
