My Flagtails

Thanks for your input Neale, although your post has intrigued me...

With the insignis being fine at 22C, are you saying that you believe the Aquajardin stock to be insignis, or that if I was to consider a Flagtail I should hunt down an insignis?

As I've written many a time before, this LFS of mine is superb for fish keepers looking for "leftfield" fish, but they do sometimes have incorrect labels eg. Nanochromis parilius (with yellow/white/black barred upper caudial fin) labelled as the "rare as hens teeth" Nanochromis nudiceps.

Okie dokie, thanks for clarifying. Certainly a quirky riverine fish to think about, although my current hunch is that I'd rather the whole group of six went to someone who could house the whole group in I guess a 750+ litre tank :)

Not sure where it came from, but I've just thought about the lovely three remaining Anostomus anostomus, who shared a tank with my Opsarius and some Climbing Perch at the LFS. They could be another contender, adding some grace to the 540l.

Glad we were able to help with the flagtails. Are you going to be getting them?

I have at least a week to think on it, but my hunch at the mo is that I'd rather someone buy the whole school (or two trios) and give them some conspecific company, in a tank size beyond my 540l.

Whatever I decide to do, was great to see them in the flesh and find out a little about them.

Thats what your lfs wants to do?? They want to sell all the flagtails in a group?

No, the LFS will sell them to anyone who is aware of their requirements.

It looks as if my 540l could only house one adult. I'm a strong believer in animals having companions of their own type, unless there is very good reasons whyy not to eg. I find it "wrong" that Ruby, our Syrian Hamster, must be kept alone... but I know she would fight to the death if someone invaded her territory. On the other hand, having bought a Synodontis brichardi on Monday, I like the idea of buying at least one more of the remaining four as a species mate (although I suspect I would need to house three or four to spread any conspecific aggression).

From what I've read, the young adults of this species travel in massive schoals to spawning grounds off the Amazon. That suggests to me that they are fundamentally a social fish and anyone wanting to buy them needs to provide adequate conditions to look after a group of them, even if its just a trio, which appears to mean that they will need something like a 200 gallon tank minimum as an adult group.
I cannot picture myself ever being able to afford the initial outcost and upkeep of something like an 8x2x2 tank for them, but I'm sure other fish keepers could.

I see. Glad to see you are a responsible fish keeper.
