It doesn't. But if it were about the gear I wouldn't get such lousy shots when I try with my Mamiya Leaf Credo 80 as the iso range is very limited.

No doubt...gear alone won't take a good photo.  But you do need the appropriate gear for your subject.

Take your Mamiya for example, you said you can't get good fish photos because it has a limited ISO range.  So no amount of skill, patience, etc is going to help. Gear does play some role that's all I meant

You do have some beautiful photos.  Out of curiosity what ISO are you using on the D3?  BTW, I checked out the website you listed in your profile.  That is some stunning work.  Very impressive!!

Most of the D3 shots are taken at ISO 1250. This allows me to keep the F stop at 5.6 or 6.3 for depth, while shooting at 1/125. It also allows me to keep the flash at a lower setting of around 1/8th power.

Great, thx for the info.  I haven't been able to use flash as I don't have a way to get it off camera.  So I'm generally shooting at an ISO of 6,400.  Looks like it's time to invest in a remote trigger!!

Nothing will transform your photography like a pair of pocket wizards. I know that there are cheaper products out there. I've been doing this 22 years and tried them all over the years and PW is certainly the best. If you look around, you should be able to pick up a used PW II for around a hundred bucks each.
