here's a pinned topic on the subject with some more info, help you make up your mind.

No way in hell would I be able to cut my fishes head off, or bash it over the head, or stick somthing into its brain. Wouldn't you be terrified if you saw a sharp object coming after you? Or a bolder about to drop on your head?

I think putting some type of liquid in the tank to make him fall asleep or somthing, or drop the tanks temperater by adding ice. I feel this would make his organs shut down. Instead of dumping im in ice cold water and shocking him and then having him die.

I dunno. Such barbaric ways of killing fish.

Everyone has their own methods and opinions about how to properly euthanize fish I suppose.
I used to use alka-seltzer, but stopped using it because the fish would freak out everytime I did it.
Now I just cut their heads off. Very clean, very fast way of getting it done.

Sorry for you loss
I have a glowlight who has looks bent, it's been like that for ages, I asked my lfs who have said it could be due to over use of medication, which I have to say I have used lots in the early days as a newbie - I have to say I do worry that it might be something else, but he is otherwise fine, chubby, active and eating well so I don't feel I could put him down.
