My First Reef

I went to my local LFS on the 28th of August and in there marine deparment they were having a sale. So instead of buying a pumop for my pond I got my Dad to fork out £150 to buy an Arcadia Classica 50L aquarium with heater and filter, 2 bags of live sand, salt, test kits, hydrometer, de-cloriphier, bacteria to aid the filter and a Fluval 105 filter. It came with a 15W tropical light bulb, and then I bought a 15W high intensity marine white light with a reflector. Well now it has been running for nearly 3 months I thought post some pics and see what you guys think of it.

I currently have two types of coral, a leather and a frag of zoanthids:

Can anyone tell me what these things are.

There is some redy brown thing growing on one of my live rock pieces

and this breen and dark purple stuff,which my pyramid snail eat half of, and then it just grew back within a day!

I added a coral beauty yesterday and it seemed fine, but during the night it died for some reason. Any ideas why? The water parameters are ok, not sure why it died. I have put it in a bag of tank water and frozen it because I cannot go to my LFS until the weekend.

So, what does everyone think of my tank? What improvements can I make? What new fish/coal/inverts do you think I should add?

looks nice. but i think you need more light. That leather looks like its a tad un-happy. Love your goby

Thanks, yeah the goby looks really good, although he is pretty skittish. Does anyone have any ideas on what the dark purple and green thing is and the reddybrown thing? Also, there is some relly wierd thing in the tank now. It is a white/very light pinky colour with VERY faint spots. It moves across the rock VERY slowly and hase killed one of the smaller feeder shrimp. I found the shrimp pinned up against the live rock with some of the things slime on it. I cant get a decent pic right now but does anyone have any ideas on what it might be?

Hi and welcome to the salty side. As ben said, you need to upgrade your lighting the leather is looking unhappy, does it ever extend it's polyps? The dark purple stuff is likely to be coraline, green is likely to be algae, reddy/brown is probably diatoms. your weird thing, how many arms if any does it have?

well done getting your dad to fork out for the tank, maybe you can persuade him to get you some new lights as well

Yes it exteds it everyday and when it does it looks very big, its just i took the picture at about 8:00pm and i usually turn the lights off at that time and it usually closes up before i turn on the lights. However, latley it hasnt opened and i am thinkin it is maybe shedding again. One of its arms has a bit of brown on it.

You need better flow and better lighting.

They dont need to shed at all iirc, they do it when something upsets them
