Good day,

today I bought my aquarium first Invertebrates.
I have now 2 Fire shrimps, 5 blue leg hermit crabs and 2 black turbo snails.
Do I have to feed this guys? or they can just eat whats on Live rocks or tanks walls?
Do I need more guys for my 28 gal?
Also snails are on tank walls all the time, should not they be on a sand? I am afraid that one snail
sometimes finds himself on a heater, is that dangerous? I know heater turns on sometimes in the night.

Thanks guys for all your help.

turbos wont go on sand, maybe very rairly if they fall off a rock. Do you have any fish? Its always good to get shrimp AFTER you get fish so they can eat the leftovers, if not, just put a very SMALL amount of food in the tank, they will find it. Snails and hermits will find what they need on the rocks.

Thanks for your reply.

No I dont have any fish yet, so I gave some tropical flakes
to shrimps. Oh my got what happened is that they started to move so fast
trying to catch them, I am not sure if they were able to get any, did I had to turn off pumps
to stop water movement?
Also how much is enough? I put there like 2 pinches of them.

2 pinches is way too much.... maybe one decent sized flake every other day....

dont worry so much 2 pinches is a bit much but u dont need to turn off heaters or pumps the shrimp will catch what the want. more hermits may be wanted later on so keep that in mind.

what makes you say he needs more hermits, what if he keeps nutrients down by skimmer and water changing, what if he has low light and doesnt have it on long, what if he gets more snails instead of hermits.

You dont NEED more hermits, if you dont have any algae, dont get any more algae eaters.

I agree.

i think 5 hermits isnt enough for 35 lbs of live rock. you can put more snails in there. but once there are some fish and the algae really starts then hermits or snails or any other thing you can put in the tank for cleaning the tank should be put in.

i dont care what musho says i think 5 hermits isnt enough for 35 lbs of live rock. you can put more snails in there. but once there are some fish and the algae really starts then hermits or snails or any other thing you can put in the tank for cleaning the tank should be put in.

That is pretty much what musho was saying i think. Dont put them in unless there is enough for them to feed on.

5 hermits /could/ be plenty for 35lbs of live rock. If he keeps nutrients down by skimmer and water changing, has low light and doesnt have it on long, or gets more snails instead of hermits. Or doesn't get fish at all. Or if he doesn't want all of the algae completely gone. You don't HAVE to get rid of the algae. :shifty:

yeah, i kinda like my hair algae in some areas of my tank, half my back wall is covered in hair algae, i like it like that, and dont want anything eating. It provides nutrient export and has lots of micro and macro life in it.

If you dont care what i think, thats fine, just remember, people wont always care what you think, which is the case here.

what im trying to emphazise is that i think some more algae grazers would help in the long run. And i really do care what everyone on this forum and website think & care. Believe me i have no one step solution to everything in marine aquaria or anything for that matter so what every last person says to me goes into consideration.

What I'm wondering is why do you think that?

"IF" is the key word there. :)
IF there is no more algae, then more algae grazers won't be needed.
He could always add them at a later date, besides, a little bit of algae isn't bad.
