Sometimes I unplug my filter, to do a water change or when I'm feeding live foods and I want to let the fish cathc them before the filter blows them into the middle of next week.

The last few times I've done this, when I plug the filter back in...nothing. Nothing at all.

The only way I have found to get it started again is to take it out, dismantle it, reassemble it in exactly the same way, and put it back again. Or sometimes I just wait five minutes and then it's ok.

What's up with it? I really don't appreciate having to dismantle my filter every time I do a water change! Also I'm scared one day it'll stop completely and I'll be left filterless. Is it dead? Should I chuck it and get a new one? It's a Fluval 2+ if thats relevant.

cheers

Personally I am not a fan of Internal Filters at all and would have chucked it a long time ago. Since you have it though, have you tried contacting Hagen and see what they say?

I've had that happen to my Whisper external power filter in the past. I would unassemble it and then reassemble it and it would work again. Eventually I found that there was some muck on the impeller (not a lot, but just enough) to interfere with startup. I scrubbed the impeller (in tank water, of course) and it has been fine since. I'm not familiar with the workings of internal filters but perhaps this may help. The motors that run these things are not very powerful (nor do they need to be) so sometimes a small amount of resistance may prevent them from starting up normally.

my powerheads seem to get like a film on the ceramic part of the impeller, must be like limescale or calcium from the magnets. anyway it's not a big problem get a small screwdriver or blunt implimeant and Very gently pick away at the deposits on the rotor and also inside the pump but be Very careful not to scratch it up

Sweet, thanks for your help guys.

Enchanted I like the filter overall and being young and jobless don't have spare cash for a new one. and there's no point getting an external cos it's only a tiny tank and theres no space outside for it anyway. :)

I'll try cleaning that impeller tomorrow, if it doesn't help I'll get in touch with Hagen again cos they were pretty helpful last time I had problems. :)

thanks :)
