My Daughter's Tank

A few of you have been asking for updates on Emily's tank.

We've replaced two weeds - Egeria densa and Limnophila sessiflora. You can see two new additions; red Alternanthera sp. coming up behind the fern and Cryptocoryne undulata "Green" in front of the vallis.

The 6 pots are Utricularia graminifolia, waiting to be planted into my nano.

Future plans are to replace the vallis with tall crypts i.e. balansae, and H. polysperma with Heteranthera zosterifolia. The right-hand fern may also be replaced with the windelov var.

It's also tempting to hava a carpet of E. tenellus but we'll be looking at upgrading filtration before that to improve circulation.

It's a low-maint set-up and slow growing. No algae issues, even though there's no algae eating fish.

Fish are now 6 platys (+ lots of fry), 10 neon tetras and 3 fancy swordtails.

Woah !

Lovely looking tank there !

A 10 yearold .....Damn man !

Its the beginnings of a mini George except *states the obvious* Shes a girl lol !

I wish I could make a tank that nice :D

Welldone Emily :D

Keep up the good work !

Richie

Stunning. One of the best planted tanks ive ever seen IMO.
I like the combination of colours and leave sizes/shapes.

Wow! I really like that aquascape! Emily's shown us how crap we all are lol

EDIT: Ok not all lol, me

Love the look of the tank George, Congrats to your daughter.

Helps me a lot because is the same size as my tank although I only have 2 x 18W.

I've been looking for a red plant that will work under my lighting and see you have one in there. I have a Ludwigia species that is red and doesn't seem to grow any, and also a Rotala Macrandra which is dying a slow death, so I think I might copy your daughter here.

I think I'll replace my Hyryus Celefri with Vallis as well because it is going brown and they look similar (excuse my naivity in saying this)

3 cheers for George's Daughter, inspirational like her father.

For crying out load, why does she have to be so good!

Lovely scape, really nice, she has a talent for it. Do you give her much help?

I help a little with the practical stuff, Emily is quite small for her age. Composition is all her own work.

Believe it or not Emily's not even interested too much in plants or fish. To her it's a nice addition to her room that she wants to look good. She takes after her mother in this respect, who also has a good eye for design. Better than I. We make a good team.

Emily's got a lovely tank there. The A. reineckii looks very, very good. Hmmm, not that I'm biased, though. I don't like the plant one bit.

It's very similar to my 20g in stats, but she's got more light and less CO2, and the plant choices are different. Have either you or her thought about Bolbitis to replace the fern? A gorgeous fern, and truely stunning when allowed to grow.

llj :)

I really like the look of the left hand side, particularly the way the Vallis umbrellas the Creeping Jenny.

I wish I could get my three kids off MSN long enough to show an interest in aquatics. I`ll show them your daughter`s tank, maybe that will inspire them (my tank certainly doesn`t).

How did you plant the vallis? Any particular spacing? How many stems, bunches or pots did you use?

Vallisneria spiralis was bought in "bunches" wrapped in lead from my LFS at £1.25 each.

I think there was around three bunches, each with around five plants. Each plant was planted around the internal filter on the left around an inch or so apart, using big tweezers.

It is a brute of a plant sending out runners almost daily and the leaves span the surface after a week or so, until the next water change when it gets a "haircut" with sharp scissors.

I'm looking forward to replacing it with crypts.

Wow, it looks so nice! I wish I could say more, but I know absolutely nothing about what you guys are talking about. I guess more research on my part is in order. I'd love to work with the real plants some day. ANyway, it looks fantastic!

Give it a go! You know it makes sense. There is absolutely tons of info on this forum, including the links to other sites.
