I've been having some problems with my corys recently. Within the last 3 weeks, all 6 of them died. There seems to be no problem with all the other fish. I inspected the dead fish but no visual signs. They have been eating well and acting well. I checked the water parameters and its good. I was wondering if it had anything to do with the change of temperature since it has recently been in the 90s. My heater is always set at 80 degrees. I stuck my hands in the tank but the water fells not too warm. It actually feels like it always does. What could be the problem? There are no visual signs at all. Please help.

That is very hot for most tanks- what type of corys did you have that died? I suspect that it was the heat that killed them...

Is your thermometer a stick on glass one? those are quite unaccurate sometimes. If not check your heater. What brand is it? Maybe u should buy a new one if u find out that it was ur heater that killed ur cories.

THey were peppered, bronze, Albino & Juhli. I have a stick on the glass but I also have one hanging in the tank. The stick on one said it was almost 86 degrees even though the water felt cold to the touch. I turned down the heater though. I dont get it..howcome its only the corys affected. All me other fish are doing great. My gravel is clean. I cant think of nothing except the heat. Does anyoen know if corys are sensitive to warmer temperatures?

Hi ravekiss

I'm so sorry to hear about your corys. :byebye: I've lost several lately too.

It could very well be the change of temperature that made your corys sick. They are not so much sensitive to temperature as they are to sudden increases in it. This is one of the main reasons why many people have problems at this time of year.

With the warm weather we are having recently, running the air conditioner can often be the cause of stress to corys. Unless you have one run by a thermostat, it's almost impossible to keep the room temperature consistent. If the water temperature rises too much when no one is home, (and the air conditioner is off) it can warm a small tank well above the temperature you have the heater set for. Then, when you cool the room, it drops back relatively suddenly, only to rise again the next day. Sometimes the normal day to night temperature can vary greatly in a closed up house or apartment.

My corys that died have been in the two ten gallon tanks that are closest to my air conditioner, and I am treating the rest with Kanamycin, even though only one actually looks sick at the moment. While doing this I have been monitoring the temperature closely with a digital thermometer that tells the temperature in tenths of a degree. I am amazed at how quickly the water warms and cools.

Is your little bandit cory still alive?

Yes he is still alive...strong little guy. I think his fins are slowly growing back too! I've reduced the heater a little hoping it'll help. I dont have an ac in my apartment at the moment.

Hi ravekiss :)

I'm so glad your bandit is doing well. I've thought about him often.

Sorry for your losses
ravekiss, R.I.P.

Its so sad because I've had the 2 albinos and the bronze since I started my tank. And besides that..I love corys :byebye:
