Someone i know from another forum had the saying:
The solution for pollution is dilution.
So in short, to get any abnormality in water parameters back to the normal level, you need to do water changes.
Becareful of ph swings though, check the ph in you're tap water and your tank , there shouldnt be much difference so if there isnt no difference or a small difference the water change shouldnt effect the fish.
