All the male cats I have had have an AMAZING personality! The females, not so much.

Hope you're convinced... You would also get a wider selection from the shelters or RSPCA

I seriously would go to some rescue shelters. It's often more likely that dogs have 'mental problems'.

Cats are quite 1 dimentional really. As you go around the cages you see which ones come rushing to the front to be fussed and which ones dont.

I would have to disagree that cats are 1 dimensional! I'd say they are much more complex than dogs, you just have to get to know them first. Dog's will fuss over anyone, cats are much more discerning.

Shame about your violent boy! Mine's a big softie but I suppose they're all individuals boy or girl. Have you thought about going to the RSPCA or cat shelter? Give a loving home to a poor orphan kitty?

i would like to do that, but dont most of them have diseases and some have mental problems i.e being afraid of humans and not liking to interact with other animals

If you go to a reputable charity they wouldn't give you a diseased animal and they should be able to tell you what kind personality of the cat has.

Trollfest I've had over 11 cats, they are more independant than dogs, but certainly not more complex.

Eitherways that's not what I meant, you wont find a cat which is calm/quiet most of the time, but then suddenly goes beserk or agressive because it's scared of you. You can see from the offset if the cat has a fear of humans, they don't hide it at all.

Oh and to John, if you're wanting a kitten then it probably wont matter too much about it's past behavioural wise (unless it's mother was feral), because the kitten will be easily taught to be part of a loving family.

I would probably go and get a good book and do some research before going to get one. I've always found Vicky Hall (cat behaviouralist) to be very readable and informative. Ooh so exciting, I'm jealous

Really does just depend on the animal.

When you get him/her, spend some time with them for the first couple of days. You'll soon find a name that suits. :)

Yeah, after we got our one cat, we found out he was really fast and speedy and loved to play like crazy (full of energy). He was also black, so we called him Jet! It fit his personality perfectly!

Try not to get fixated on colour, using a rescue centre is 1000000000% better than a pet shop but you will need to be open minded about trivial things like colour, or be prepared to wait until they get kittens in of the colour you want.

I personally would never buy from a petshop/other similar source as in many ways you are adding to the burden of the rescues and charities - for every kitten that finds a loving home for life through a pet shop you can be sure another is out on the street by the time it's a year old or worn out by the time it's 3 because it was never spayed. Better not to use petshops at all (IMO)

Cats are independant, playful and individual so choosing a name without knowing the cat is hard, unless you have a name you love and are going to use no matter what.

I would pick one based on personality rather than going for a particular colour. Also I would go for a boy. Firstly it's cheaper and quicker when then have to get "done" and also a few people told me boys were more affectionate when I was getting a kitten; I did get a boy and he never leaves my side.

i wouldnt say that.

i have three girls and one boy. the boy is fussy but on his terms, not the kind of cat to sit on your lap, yet two of my girls are extreme fuss bags you cant get away from!

boys roam more too. girls are homely.

but i agree personality is always number 1
