hi all, this year my mum has suggested getting me a kitten for xmas :D no doubt my answer was yes and we sat down on the train journey (from xmas shopping) and planned it out!

the christmas list!:

kitten: all white or tabby
red collar with ID tag
Litter tray with litter
scrathing post
crate/carrier
toys
radiator bed
cat milk and food
water and food bowls
bed

suggested names please preferrably associated with markings

gender: female
place of purchase: Rescue Center :D
Age: about 9-12 weeks
history: home raised

check out the poll please
thanks

I would pick one based on personality rather than going for a particular colour. Also I would go for a boy. Firstly it's cheaper and quicker when then have to get "done" and also a few people told me boys were more affectionate when I was getting a kitten; I did get a boy and he never leaves my side.

so i should get a male then?

the last male i had used to jump up and scratch and bite my legs when he just wanted to go to the toilet!

Lucky you JohnRoss... I bet you're going to get mostly suggestions for the allwhite, and the name to be "Snowy", ... But realistically, pure white's do have a problem with cancer on the ears, eyelids and nose.... (Exclusively from what I experienced during my SPCA days)... On the other hand, if you do not have extreme sunny days in your area, you may get away with the white one.

Hence my reason for opting for the tabby.... My favourite of course being the tortoise shell... (I just love them).

In this regard, I would rather go for the female, as they are "cleaner" in the sense that they do not "spray" your curtains and chairlegs, (or roam) which some males continue doing even if they are sterilized.... The female will be a lot more expensive to spay yes!, but it's woth it.

yes, alot of the pure white breed can be deaf :( but thats just the way it is, i love tortoise shells but my pet shop dosent sell them :(

Pet shop? Why don't ypu rescue a kitten from a shelter?

i've not seen any petshops here that sell kittens/cats/puppies/dogs

Shame about your violent boy! Mine's a big softie but I suppose they're all individuals boy or girl. Have you thought about going to the RSPCA or cat shelter? Give a loving home to a poor orphan kitty?

Tabby cos they are just plain gorgeous and pure white cats tend to have alot more problems (cancer, they burn alot easier than other colourations, deafness, blindness etc)

In reply to the above: cant you train it not to jump and scratch? cant say as ive never been able to have cat cos of the dogs and now ive got a greyhound

I've only had one cat, the one we have now, and we've never been able to train him to do anything he doesn't want to do anyway! Fortunately he's quite well behaved.

Are cats and greyhounds together a definitie no no? I'd really like a greyhound.

i would like to do that, but dont most of them have diseases and some have mental problems i.e being afraid of humans and not liking to interact with other animals

I wouldn't get one from a pet shop as their parents are usually kept in poor conditions. I have a long haired male tabby and he is very affectionate, he headbuts you for attention and males are cheaper.

I seriously would go to some rescue shelters. It's often more likely that dogs have 'mental problems'.

Cats are quite 1 dimentional really. As you go around the cages you see which ones come rushing to the front to be fussed and which ones dont.
They always have loads of kittens in, and also older cats.

What area are you in. I could point you to your nearest shelters? But the RSPCA is always a good start.
I really would consider it if I were you! :)

Oh and one note on your 'list' of stuff to buy. I probably wouldn't buy the cat a bed. It WILL sleep wherever it likes! Lol. Often with ours that's always been at the end of our beds

Here are a few places to look...

Cats Protection League

A List of Rescue Shelters in your area

RSPCA <-- that's the England + Wales site, they do cover northern island but I'd give them a ring if I were you.

Assisi Cat Shelter <-- One I found whilst googling, they have kits in at the moment

Oh and sorry if that all seems pushy, but I really hope you consider the options. There are lots of loney and unloved kittens out there needing homes. :)
