He's a great little guy, I'm assuming he's a male? Shop owner said its probably too young to tell yet. She got a bunch in so will get him a girlyfriend (or boyfriend) when I go to pick up my Anostomus Anostomus!

And instead of making a new thread, here's my full grown Angelfish!

Hi there,

It depends on which checkerboard you have:

If it's Dicrossus maculatus, males need to be at least half adult size (9 to 12cm male adult size), they will then show a slightly lanceolate caudal fin filled with vertical bands.

If it's Dicrossus filamentosus, males tend to show the filaments/extensions on the caudal fin edges from an early age (mine certainly showed them from about 4cm).

Unfortunately it's difficult to tell from your photo, the first image appears to have a lyreate tail, but it's not clear, and the second image doesn't include the tail. Have you got a clean 'side on' shot of the fish???

thanks
Sure can.

Oh and so far I haven't been able to get a good pic of my angel with something to compare his size, whenever I hold anything up to the glass he gets scared and swims away lol!

Hi Meg,

Still not clear enough to decide if it has lyreate extensions on the top and bottom egdes of the tail fin. Which ever it is, it's a male with those vertical bars in the tail (although the hunch is it's D filamentosus).

Its tail is usually rounded but its a bit nipped right now, I don't think there are any extensions on it.
