I do apologise after looking it up you are completely right on the metronidazole i think I was getting confused with miconazole. I had to know it for a unit at uni but could never separate the two.
If a fish is ill then it needs treating I totally agree, what I disagreed with was treating a fish that was un-diagnosed or in quarantine 'just in case'. I believe it would put undue stress on an already stressed fish and may do more harm than good. Presumably if a fish was ill it would have time to show symptoms in a quaratine tank anyways. In that case clean water and a small amount of salt would be better imo.
Obviously this is just another thing that comes down to personal experience
