my bn has become very aggressive.its not enough that she kills my gn, she now thinks she can bully my corys. for the first time ever i saw her ( spines ) come from the side of her mouth / head. i never seen her do it before! in fact i forgot they do this.lol she got them out and looked like she was going to nudge a cory so i gave the tank front a gentle flick with my finger and she bolted back in her cave.

why does a peaceful pleco turn nasty so darn quick??

she has a great personality but im thinking of getting rid of her. i cant risk losing anymore fish because of her tantrums, and i want a peaceful community tank.

now my gn has passed on i was thinking of getting a para pleco, but im not sure thats a good idea with the way my bn is acting.

any suggestions on how i can make her calm down?

mark

I wouldnt add any other plecs with her, by the sounds she is just nasty. Some plecs can just be that way, I had a lovely common (woman turned up on my doorstep with it?) it was ok for a while then it ate rams, cardinals and any small fish, I kept her with my big common and gibby till a friend had her off me, but she killed another plec so my friend had to re-home it.

Have you tried re-arranging all your tank to move terratories?

i just put a low light by the tank and watched to see whats going on, i heard the gravel being moved alot.it only took 5 mins to see why, i watched one of my clown plecos come out from its bog wood, settle in the middle of the tank and start eating.....my bn comes along at an alarming speed and head butts the poor thing  my clowns are shy as it is, that bn has to go!!

thats a shame :(

yup tried it a few times. i just dont know what to do with her.

Afraid it maybe for the best, daft suggestion does she stay in one particular "cave" I was just wondering with this added agression has she spawned (I think they will without a male, I know some fish will) and she is guarding eggs? maybe thats why she is a bit aggressive?

I would say get her a mate, but that might make her worse.

ive checked the tank over and no eggs,i checked her cave first then the rest....i even looked under the bogwood

hmm....a male bn.....thing is she's almost fully grown, the bn's in my lfs are all juvies ( 2'' and under ) so he may get pounded.lol

im thinking maybe put a more dominant fish in? she tries attacking it will put her in her place and calm her down?

Oh well was worth a look I'm stumped now as to why she has gone nasty. I have a bn dont know what sex it is yet its only tiny, I did have 5 but lost 4, I think they were just too little to be moved. Sorry it looks like a re-homing job then

I wouldnt know what to suggest for a more dominant fish, maybe some sort of cichlid that would have a go back, but saying that you dont want injuries.

very true, i dont think would want to risk killing fish to find out. i wouldnt feel right about doing it and the guilt factor would be high :-(

i will visit my lfs i got her from and see if they will kinda take her back for store credit.its a shame because i have gotten attached to her.

my female BN plec drove my male BN plec to death, as well as my baby l100 BN plec, and i have a footprint of over 8 sq feet and it still thinks it owns the tank lol, maybe they are just aggressive plecs.

I would offer to take her, but with 10 tanks running and well stocked in all of them and 2 sets of fry and another batch of eggs about to hatch I am kinda full.

thats quite interesting. maybe they are aggressive as a species, more so than people think.

thats ok.lol thats alot of fry!

I wouldn't go far to say they are an aggressive species, even guppies and mollies show aggressive tendencies.
Like Betta's each BN can show different characteristics, my pair (Richard & Judy) love to hide together next to the filter intake and love to hang upside down off of the filter outflow, where as Rupert (downstairs tank), loves to sleep on the sand all day until an algae wafer hits him on the head (rather bad learnt behaviour on my part there lol).
