5 days ago I bought 2 Moonshine/Silver Mollies, 2 Black Mollies and 2 platies of some description (black with orange fins) to go in my 160L tank (Not sure how many Gallons can somone please tell me). My tank was set up 4 weeks prior to the fish being put in and had 0 nitrate and 0 nitrite in it. My 2 female Moonshine Mollies are pretty calm most of the time except when i feed them, one of the mollies chases all the fish and tries to take a bite out of them (luckily it hasnt succeeded yet) but it mostly chases the other moonshine molly. It does this for for about 20-30 mins. I have fed flake and granules to see if that is the problem and I have increased the amount to see if it was a shortage of food. But it carried on. Any suggestions to solve this problem(if it is one).

My female black molly has a problem with its eyes. On 1 eye it has a white gue on it and the other it has less white gue but has 2 bubbles on it. I read that problems with the eyes can be due to too much oxygen, which could be a possibility in my aqaurium as i do have a bubble diver, a bubble curtain and my external filter inlet tube is above the water surface. I have turned the curtain and diver of for a day and the problem has not gone away, infact i think it has got worse as a bubble thing has appeared just further back from the eyes. The fish is not blind it just has a blanket of gue which is semi-transparent.

My tank has real plants and I have done 1 30L water change

Please I am new to the hobby but my Dad did used to own fish but he hasnt ever come across the problem.
I would appreciate the help.

Thanks Toby

hi toby when you say a white gue would you say it was a cotton like growth?

and bubble on the eye?

well you have 2 options id say

1 gue could be a fungus growth from were the fish is being bullied the open wound has bcome infected

and the bubble thing could be pop eye if you mean on its eye?

those are my guesses?
if ur not sure give ur local fish store a ring and descrube the problem and they will tell you what treatments to buy i would do it sooner rather than later good luck hope this helps

I think my Black Mollies have got white spot. Well one definately does, im going to my lfs to get the medicine

Pcik up some Melafix. I have a female black molly with the same, and it is due to stress, whcih lead's to a bacterial infection. You seem to be having alot of problem's with your mollies, check your water, post the result's, then do a water change.

The stuff on the eyes has disapeared and I am treating it with white spot. When I tested my ammonia it came back at 0.1 my nitrite was 0 and my nitrate was about 30-40. When I went to my lfs and told them my readings they said that was fine for my tank which hasnt been set up for a week.

If I introduce a male moonshine/silver molly will it stop the female chasing the other female or just make it worse.

My platys are fine and I think one has become pregnant, well i hope so anyway.

Thanks

Wait did you cycle? If not do daily water change's and dont add anymore fish. Also, you could add a male. I dont know if it would make a difference. Also, im guessing your lfs used a Strip Test Kit? Those are unreliable, and the safe chart goes up to .2 on the strip kit, but no amount of ammonia, or nitrite is safe. Do a water change, now.

Not yet I had to go out. But I am going to do it first thing tommorow. I will post the info then

I'm guessing that your tank is not cycled - please excuse me if it is, but a nitrAte reading of 0 sounds very unlikely.

A 'cycled' tank means that your filter has a population of good bacteria in it which help to clean the water, processing the ammonia your fish excrete into nitrite and then nitrate. Setting the tank up and letting it run empty will not have cycled it - your nitrate reading would be a lot higher if the tank had cycled, as this is the end product of the bacteria.

There are some very helpful articles on cycling and bacteria posted on the 'new to the hobby' forum which you should read.

Ideally, you should try and return the fish to the shop, and cycle your tank using liquid ammonia (full instructions in the posted articles) which will take around three to four weeks, less if you can get hold of some 'mature' (i.e. full of bacteria) filter sponge from someone else.

If you can't return or rehome the fish, you will need to read up very carefully on how to get your fish through the next month or two as your tank cycles. You need to buy a master liquid test kit (one which uses test tubes and chemicals rather than strips etc) so you can keep a very close eye on your levels of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.

Most fish illnesses occur when the fish is stressed or you have problems with your water quality (which you have, as the tank is not cycled). The medication will hopefully get rid of this disease but you MUST get your tank cycled or you will not have sorted out the underlying problem.

The fish's aggression may also be because of stress.

I hope this helps. Please feel free to ask any questions if any of this isn't clear. Good luck! :good:

my mistake the nitrate was 25 and the nitrite 0, my ammonia is 0.1. I was addidng the bacterial booster for four weeks before adding fish

Thanks

i havent put any salt in, should I? I have platys in there also, will it restrict what fish I can add in the future?
