He's a healthy, normal betta, but there's something he does that's a little odd. When he flares at me, I know he's supposed to puff up, and his gills look like they get bigger. However, for some reason, only his right gill puffs up... his left gill stays the normal size. Is he just a wierd fish, or is something wrong with him?

:hi: to the forum. Introduce yourself in the newbie section.

My betta had that problem at one point in time, but he got better somehow. I am not sure that there is anything wrong with him, per se. If he is breathing and you do not plan on breeding him, he should be just fine.

The only thing I can think of to get him better is maintaining good water conditions and perhaps a bit of aquarium salt and bettafix.

okay, thanks. :)

Also, I kinda overfed him a bit when I first got him, so he's a little tubby. Is there any way other than not feeding him as often that I can get him to lose weight?

Daphnia is good for their digestive system as well as a pea. Try a frozen pea, nuke the sucka til it's just warm and peel the outer shell then feed.
