I just bought my betta fish a few days ago. He's not my first but it's been a while since I've had one. Anyway, everytime I look over the top of the bowl his gills flare and he charges at me like he wants to fight me. Does anyone else's betta fish do that? Also when I put pellets in to feed him he'll eat one or two. Is that normal?

Hey I have 7 Bowls with a male betta in each bowl I KNOW BETTAS! lol His flaring is telling you 1: he is healthy 2: he is happy, and 3: He feels threatened. It is absoultyl nothing to worry about and it is actually a good thing! His eating habbits are his won and every betta is defferent the only thing YOU need to worry about is that he east SOMETHING. Pellets may not be the best choice though and they love Blood WOrms. So Good luck and I am sure you Betta will live a happy life! ~Scarlett

i dont think it is necessarily because he feels threatened. hes probably just showing off. my bettas do it when they see me approaching with food...

My betta does that too :D

If I look in from the side of his bowl, he swims over to look back. But when I glare over the top of the bowl, he flares at me and charges the surface. He's so cute

There's nothing wrong with pellets, it's best to vary the diet, but pellets are fine. :) I don't think he feels threatened either...bettas just like to show off how tough they are :flex:

Be glad that he responds to you that way! I only have two that act that way when I approach their container. Others just try to swim through it. At least he's flaring, which is a sign of a threat display for a fight, or maybe he thinks you're a female betta and you turn him on. :shifty: In any case, the flaring is very healthy.

In the case of a betta, it's not an attitude problem - it just ATTITUDE! :flex: 8) :hey:

Edit for Kelly:
BTW, I found homes for 13 of them so far, so now I'm down to 23. Mean Mr.Mustard is having some sort of sickness (slight fungus, but that's now gone) but his fins are clamped. I lost Agni to fungus. Justin's water keeps clouding up fast, within a day. Do you know why? Evil Ryu now takes the top spot in the combat division.

Got any more pics of your betta stables? :)
