I have my Betta in a 30g with a few swords and mollies and lots of molly fry. At night when all the fry are "sleeping", my betta sneaks up behind them and when she gets close enough they scurry away. Makes me wonder what her agenda really is. Also, I found out how often she goes up for air. About every 3 minutes she surfaces. I know, I know, lots of time on my hands. The betta really is one of the more interesting fish when in a community tank. She really loves to swim across the bubble bar when all the bubbles are coming up and she definitely likes to swim in patterns. She really doesn't mess with the other fish and nobody really messes with her except for the occasional interest in fry. Just some of my observations.

I don't know what it is but my Betta likes to do the same thing with the bubble bar.. He also surfaces often in my 29 gallon too. Haven't figured that one out.

My betta use to try to swim against my old (bad) filter. I would blow him around but he would try so hard to get to the other side lol.

That's cause they actually breathe from the surface.

My girls like to swim infront of the filter, they stay on the spot but they do this on purpose. I reckon they like to surf

Bettas are also good opportunists with hunting/food,if it's small enough, they will take it out. I'm surprised your fry have lasted long, bettas are excellent scavengers, if you have any fry eggs in a tank, they are unlikely to survive with bettas around.
