that's the tank i have
isn't that kind of small for breeding

Yea, I have that tank as well (2 of them to house a couple of my males). It seems a bit small to me as well. That heater seems to barely fit in there and I don't see a filter. It doesn't give the female much room to escape the male. I realize you say you've had success with it, but I would highly suggest you look at moving up to a 5 or 10 gallon tank, that would allow more horizontal escape room for the female and also the water quality wouldn't deteriate as quickly. You must have to transfer the fry awefully soon in a tank that small, another negative to it.

Guys, overseas they spawn them in bins just like that. After talking with a few people and reading up, they can spawn in small spaces. Some people swear by it. I am attempting my first 2.5 gallon spawn as wee speak. Nothing that small mind you, but it can happen.

im speaking from experience.. i tried to do it once... the female got ripped up bad in the first 10 mins .. ever since ive used a 10g tank

it works take a look here if you betta got ripped she was not quit ready mine spawned within an hour of putting them in this bucket the fry are now in a three foot grow out tank coming on nicely and both parent had only a few nips on the fins but that happens anyway......................

Well I think the one thing I've learned since I got into Bettas is, there are ALOT of right ways, Lol. Every breeder does it a bit different and ever breeder has what works for them. If the small container works for you, then great! If the 5 or 10 gallon works, then great! I personally like the 10 gallon as that means I get to keep the fry in there for up to a month, just more convenient for my setup. It is true the overseas breeders do things differently than most North Americans, but I think that is partly due to the fact that we're not in the "natural" lands for these fish, it's not feasible in most areas to keep all their tanks outside. I was considering doing an outside spawn this year, but the West Nile Virus is stopping me, it just hit my area this week and the last thing I need to do is promote mosquitos to breed in my yard, Lol.

That is one of those half gallon marina betta containers. I wouldn't even keep a betta in there to live, much less spawn two in it. And no, i'm not speaking from experience.

id like to point out in that article that the thai people are breeding thai bettas-not american weenie bettas :( perhaps they are tough enough to survive that but im pretty sure a good majority of ours are not :(

it just seems too cruel to me to even try.

the thai breeders also keep the bettas in these bottles their whole lives. a tiny breeding bowl would be a blessing for them

I don't know if I'm one of the "nay-sayers" or not. I have bred bettas in containers that small before the internet was what it is today. I'm certainly not saying that it can't be done...I just think that there are other options that are better for the fish. ;)

OK so most use a ten gallon but it aint full, that bucket is 4 gallon half full OK it about two they don't need much room to spawn i quite agree about keeping them in the bottles is kind of not what we are used to but its how they do it out there, they also have the hot weather all year round i have heaters all year round, i tried it it worked for me, as i said the fry are now in a 3 foot tank growing nicely, and mum and dad share another 3 foot tank divided so they have plenty of living space, i defiantly don't condone cruelty and i don't think its cruel too give them the somewhere to spawn two gallons of water is plenty,............the bucket is at least nine inches across and the two gallons gives them at least seven inches in depth plenty of cover for the female or though she didnt use it they spawned almost straaight away so happy BETTAS.
