My Beta Fish Jumped Out Of His Bowl!

They seem fine, but they will never live a complete life cycle.Bettas don't live in puddles in the wild. They need moving water.Any fish could live in a bowl without filtration for an amount of time, doesn't mean its healthy as it could be.

I'm not saying its not possible, just not right imo.But I'm not judging you, just trying to point you in a better direction for your fishes sake.
Please research before giving advice next time.

You're right bettas don't live in puddles... at least not all year long. They live in rice paddies, which have VERY STILL WATER. Bettas loathe current, especially the long-finned varieties, and they don't normally encounter strong currents the wild, either. During certain months of the year rice paddies begin to dry up and bettas actually are sometimes trapped in puddles... obviously these aren't ideal living conditions, but it helps explain why they are comfortable living in smaller tanks than most fish. They are fine in still water because they can breathe from the surface and thus don't need surface agitation to stimulate gas exchange. They do not need filters because if you keep them in 1+ gallon containers (larger is better up to about 20 gallons) and keep up on water changes you can keep your water levels perfect for them without one, and I have at least 5 bettas that are 4+ years old to prove it.

Edit: I'd also like to add that I and several other members here actually raise perfectly healthy betta fry without filters. Do you think Thai breeders, who produce some of the best fish in the world, use filters? Many of them raise their fish in big concrete tubs outside.

^^ agree with all the above

my male betta is currently in a 10gal filtered tank and he seems pretty sulky and doesnt move around much, im going to buy a 1/2 gal bowl and see if he likes it B)

I kept my boy, Sori, in a 1.25G bowl for just shy of a year. He was happy in there. He was listless in a 2.5G bowl, and paranoid in larger tank.

Well, I would really like to know how bettas survive in nature if they get so paranoid and listless in couple of litres water.. Maybe he was so stressed when you moved him to bigger tank and you didn't let him accustom himself to his new home? Or maybe there was something wrong with the water?

I didn't mean to be mean, when I said that bettas shouldn't be kept in bowls. I just said my opinion and gave you some arguments why bettas shouldn't be kept in these bowls! They just are too small! Choandy13, I wish you all the very best with this hobby, and it's very nice to know that you want to learn more about fish.

Bettas love tanks where are a lot of plants (REAL plants, not the plastic ones). The filtration doesn't have to be so strong, but if there is no movement on the water at all, there'll become a bacteria layer on the water and for betta it's harder to breath with his labyrinth system.

I'm very proud of the Finnish law recommandation about the fish tank sizes. Fish are maybe the most maltreated animals in the world. But, it's you're own decision will you protect their animal rights and how you treat them. I wish that people would understand that keeping a betta in bowl, it doesn't have as good circumstances for living as they could be.

I really don't mean to be rude or impolite or anything like that. I think there are some cultural differences in making conversation.

We aren't actually arguing facts here, though. We're stating our opinion, many times over, in a thread which is not related to the topic we are aruging. Also, this is a topic which is often argued without actual resolution, frequently.

Well, maybe atleast someone will listen and buy bigger tank for his/her betta and tries to offer him/her better home than 1 gallon of water. I wanna see healthy looking fish and I'm trying to offer them as natural home as possible.

Would you like to live in a box where you couldn't move except turn yourself around?

the comparison between a betta and 1gal of water is not like being in a box

it is like being in an average sized room, i spose i wouldnt mind as long as i got food :)

I only request that you start your own thread, rather than hijack this poor lady's, is all. It's quite enough that her fish took a trip out of his home, let's not create further unpleasentness in her request for assistance.

ive already started my own

*NO FURTHER HIJACKING PLEASE :)

What a cruel world.. And I'm a hijacker. Hah. Guess there should be coming a catfight... :p I still think that all the bettas (also "the poor lady's" who has started this thread) should have a proper home tank. They need to have space for moving! And that was the thing I wanted to comment on. A betta in a bowl is a fixed idea and that has to be cleared away!

Please post comments like this in the appropriate thread. We've been asked nicely to continue this conversation elsewhere:

I just wanted to comment the reply above. And I wanted to do it here, because my answer was clearly connected to this thread and all these comments we're having here. ;)

You can quote posts from one thread in another, you know. That's what I did.
