He was fine before i left for work and i gave him some vegetables as food (Pleco pelate)
He has had them before

now when i came back i noticed on one side he seemed more fat and the other side he looks normal
I looked down on him and no hes not pineconed.

What could it be?
How can i help him?

Hes swimming fine but sometimes a bit wobbly like he may have trapped an air bubble

I'm sorry but that sounds like dropsy to me.

NOOOO !!! :-( :shout:
Hes not pineconed yet could i still have time?
He cant die :(
I had to destroy my gourami because he got it :(
and it was too late by the time i noticed.

Could a fish get trapped air?
cause he seems to have become less fat, but still a little podgy?

He also attempted to make his first bubble nest today

Maybe he's constipated? Try feeding 1/2 a shelled, blanched pea for 3 days in a row and stop feeding his regular food. If it's dropsy, the pea will of coarse have no effect but it could be another reason why he's bloated looking. Betta can be prone to constipation unfortunately.

Good luck

Yeah Cap is right too. It very well could be constipation. Hopefully this is the case. Do what Cap said and if it goes down than your in the clear! ;)

Also! I did some more research on this and if your fish does have dropsy give it some salt baths 5-15 minutes should be fine. Also penicillin, tetracycline and naladixic acid will help cure him/her. Dropsy is usually caused by high Nitrate levels. May I recommend you buying some live plants? Java fern is almost impossible to kill. I would look into that if you don't like to do water changes. You still need to do a 25% water change weekly to keep the water clean. That is why your betta has it sadly...

I have only live plants.

And thanks for the help guys
i checked him this morning and hes back to normal and making a bubble nest again :D
Im guessing it was constipation

He probably pigged out on the pleco pellet LOL

What other foods do you feed him?

what he had was likely slight swimbladder issued caused by overeating/constipation. Especially considering his teetering to one side or having trouble swimming/maintaining balance (and that the swelling was only on one side)
dropsy has many causes. it is a symptom of an underlying physical problem. not high nitrates, it is usually organ failure (which is why 90% of the time meds do nothing), and usually from kidneys being affected and not able to remove fluid from body tissues as they should, hence the bloating.
for any type of swelling issue (constipation, dropsy, popeye, etc.), best initial treatment is EPSOM salt( magnesium sulfate) baths (NOT aquarium salt), as epsom salt draws fluid out of the tissues. Just for future reference for all the betta folk.
dont overfeed in the future. Some bettas are prone to chronic bloat/constipation/swimbladder issues. And as im sure we've all noticed bettas will eat until they pretty much explode (not literally). up to us to maintain proper feeding because they dont know when to call it quits lol
cheers

I feed him a few blood worms, terra tropical fish granuals and the odd pelate. But not in one day over the course of a week he will get these foods

Dropsy could be caused by high Nitrates. I never said it was the only reason Dropsy was caused. If you have high Nitrate levels and you fish has dropsy than that could be a possible problem.

I'm glad your betta is back to normal Asteria!

Thanks Xero :D
hes doing fine now and demanding his food ROFL

 give him his food but not as much! He needs to learn to slim down lol.
