Hi,

I've done my best to look after my fish as best as possible however 2 of my baby neons died last night.

I'm new to fish keeping and I would be grateful if anyone could give me some general pointers to test, watch out for, to do, not to do etc.... as a newbie fish keeper.

I have read the notes at the top of this forum, but is there any other useful information that anyone can give me as 2 fish have suddenly died?

Thanks
G

Hiya Gloria,

Sorry to hear that :-( . To answer your questions we need a bit more info. Please could you answer the following?

1. How big is your tank?
2. How long has it been set up?
3. How many fish do you have in it?
4. When did you add them?
5. What is the temperature in your tank?
6. Do you know what your water parameters are? (Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate)
7. How are your remaining fish - are they showing any signs of stress like breathing rapidly, colour fading, hanging near the surface of the water, not eating, 'scratching' along the substrate etc?
8. What else do you have in your tank - any live plants, for example?

Thanks, I'm sure we can get to the bottom of what's going on

Hi Platypus,

Here are the answers to your questions:-

1. How big is your tank?
20 gallons / 30h x 30d x 60w cms

2. How long has it been set up?
I recently bought this off a friend, it came with 9 guppies, 2 red phantoms, 2 black phantoms & 1 neon (I added 3 baby neons)

3. How many fish do you have in it?
9 guppies, 2 red phantoms, 2 black phantoms, 2 neons

4. When did you add them?
The only new ones were 3 neons of which 2 have died

5. What is the temperature in your tank?
22 degrees

6. Do you know what your water parameters are? (Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate)
I've checked them using a kit and they are all fine

7. How are your remaining fish - are they showing any signs of stress like breathing rapidly, colour fading, hanging near the surface of the water, not eating, 'scratching' along the substrate etc?
I noticed a guppy acting dead up against the pump but when I wiggled the pump it swam off (the dead neons were stuck in the filter), one of the black phantoms has a little fin rot/cotton wool thingy on his tail but I've got some drops for the water which I use as per the instructions (and very cautiously).

8. What else do you have in your tank - any live plants, for example?
2 live plants, 2 castle ornaments, a bridge and a no fishing sign

I hope you can help!

Thanks
G
P.S another concern i've got is that my 2 plants are deteriorating yet the levels are fine and there are enough fish in the tank to keep the plants in natural fertilizer (i would have thought?). I've seen some plant fertilizer in the LFS but I don't want to start adding stuff to the tank as I'm keen to keep the levels in the tank stable.
