My Axolotl 20Gal Tank

Recently a friend of mine asked me if I had herd of these amazing creatures called axolotls, at first it sounded like a joke so I said no. They later showed me them and I was hooked and wanted one of my own. Not long after I came across a lady who had just found over 2000 axolotl eggs in her tank after her axolotls had spawned. She sold them for 10 cents a piece so I couldn't resist, I instantly went and pulled out my old 20gal tank from lobsteretta and was on a new adventure with 15 eggs.

They are on day 4-6 so far and grow a lot each day, soon I'm expecting to see legs as that happens around day 10. But here are some pics of my babies, and yes I'm aware 15 of these is way over stocked but I'm going to sell all but 2 once they have hatched and grow a little more.

Good luck with your venture, are you set up with heaters and filtration?

They dont need much flow, but an air stone up one end would be beneficial to keep the water well oxygenated. Have you got food organised? Brine shrimp, Daphnia or Microworms are all good for newly hatch fry. Daphnia is the best choice as they can live in the water til the hatchlings get round to eating em

Its so exciting when eggs hatch,o matter what they are. I raise frogs every year in the spring. So fun to watch them grow.up.

I looked at those before.  They look great.  I think the ambient temperature here in Florida is too high and the water chillers looked expensive.  Can't wait to see them grow up.  Several month old ones were going for $30 and up last time I looked at them.

I am set up with a heater, air curtain, and do water changes every day. The temperature I have it set at is 67deg F so the eggs can develop at a decent pace. Once the hatch and get older a heater will not be necessary.

Yes I have a food source ready to go, I picked up some aquarium salt and brine shrimp eggs ( also going to try feeding them to my barbs ) . also from what I read daphnia is good but not as good as brine shrimp for freshly hatched axolotl as the brine shrimp have more nutrients that they need to grow. Not saying you can't feed them it, and once mine get a bit bigger I may give them some variety.

That's awesome , I also used to raise frogs. I used to raise fire belly frogs right from tadpoles ( what a challenge because they are super sensitive to water conditions ) and that was such an amazing experience.

Yea chillers can be expensive but luckily I live in Canada and I have a hard time keeping my water at 56deg F without a heater so these are perfect for me. Also up here a few month old axolotl sells for anywhere from 45-200 depending on type/color. So I should have no issues getting 5-10$ a pop haha

Here is today's 3:15pm update, one of the axolotl has began to really develop his whiskers or what ever they are haha a few are starting to get it as well but not as defined. Here is a pic and I will update again tonight before I go to sleep as they grow quickly

It's amazing how in less then 12 hours something can grow eyes. Sorry for the bad pics my cell doesn't pick up super small things very well but they're there!

Eyes have now developed, as well as their external gills. Now just awaiting their front legs and for them to hatch

i have 4 that have hatched now and a batch of brine shrimp getting hatched as we speak. hopefully they like them

Yaya all but 2 have hatched so far and they are eating brine shrimp.
