most of the ones you see for sale in fish shops are south american arowana the asian type i have are a lot more expencive and are on the CITIES list which means they are endangered they are banned for sale in the US but we can get them hear in the UK but they must be micro chipped the same way a dog is chipped and come with a cert to prove the fish is captive bred and not wild caught

my fish is about 10-12 months old and is a good 12-13inch

the main kind of aro you see for sale are the silver or black south american type along with a auzzie aro the jardini all of this type are allowed to be sold in the US and the rest of the world and dont need cert or micro chips

but they grow very very big black and silver arowana can reach 3ft the auzzie aro will get to agound 2f30inch are a far to agressive to keep with any kind of tank mate

asian aros come in lots of different color forms it all depends how much money you want to spend

thanks so much for the reply.I feel ive learnt something new today!

you need a big tank then.what size tank do you need for one fully grown?the aro in the lfs was a silver I think and they also had some small (3-4inch) pearl aros.does the personality differ with each type?

he is a lovely fish.do they need special diet?can they live with other fish?

the pearl aro is probably a auzzie aro jardini they are killer and you probably wont ever be able to keep it with tank mates it will be fine up to around 10inch then it will kill

all aros will eat most food frozen prawn cockle mussel white bait meal worms earth woms

Do you feed your aro carnivore stick? For some reason my black aro wouldnt eat carnivore stick and ill only eat live food so I can only feed it crickets and worms.

wow amazing fish!! there so big!! i think i'd be scared of feeding them!! lol. Do you ever have to stick your hands in there while there in the tank??

i only real feed my aro meal worms but i do feed the meal worms on the carnivor stick before i feed the worms to the aro its called gut loading the worms then you know the aro is getting the good stuff from the pellets via meal worm

stop giving the aro feeders they are not good for them

if the aro is 10inch+ it can go with out food for 1 month easy so just stop feeding it feeders and give it frozen peeled prawn from the super market it will eat them when it hungry

and yes i do put my hand in the tank the water changes dont do them selfs
:D
