Just roughly will do, unless you're wanting things like discus/rams or rare livebearers. Do you get a lot of limescale in your kettle or on your showerhead?

lol, I meant, if you did want those things, you'd need to be more concerned about the hardness of your water. If you just want 'normal' trops, then it's not so important, but it is nice to know so you can choose fish suited to your water

Ok. You probably want to look at the smaller livebearers and maybe dwarf neon rainbows, possibly cherry barbs for your tanks, rather than the tetras then, but having said that most tetras are fairly adaptable.

how big a tank should i have for say 6 mollies???

A standard three foot (so, 36x12x15") is fine for mollies.
