I have just noticed my angels have started lip locking... are they fighting or are they testing each others strength to see if they are suitable for breeding? They have never bred before although the female has. The female is bigger but the male is holding his own.

Any help appreciated. :)

That's generally pairing behavior. If they swim together between challenges, and start hanging out in one area of the tank eyeballing vertical objects it's almost certain.

They kind of swim round each other then one will prod the other in the side then start again. They hang out in one corner of the tank near the filter inlet and outlet and heater, but they have done ever once they have been in there. I will keep my eyes on them as I don't want either of them to get injured from the lip locking.

I assume tail slapping is fighting? My male ram has just started doing that to the female.

The lip locking seems to have stopped and normal behaviour has resummed. I will keep an eye on them and report any changes.

Thanks for the help, david.
