MY 29 GALLON CRACKED LAST NIGHT

My husband came in the bedroom from off the couch (bozo fell asleep watching Modern Marvels ) around 7:00 this morning waking me up "We've got a problem, the fish tank cracked"

All I could say to myself was...... "OH MY G*D, not the 55, pllleeeeeeeease Lord NOT the 55!!!!"

So it cracked down the front and water is ALL over my carpet, but still over half full in the tank so I move all the fish out and into the 55 which of course they are LOVING TO DEATH!!! My Silver Dollars are VERY upset about the two new fat little cichlids taking over their "dark side" BUT...the story gets better!!

We got all my gravel out and water and then took it back to Petsmart, well they didn't have that exact tank which was around $40, but they did have a 29 gallon that was pretty close and it was $75.00 they refunded my money for that one instead AND I put it towards another 55 EEEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!

So NOW my beloved BPs and my cutie little Rainbows will have a paradise of their own..... . My husband just got done making a stand for it. I hope it will hold, it's sturdier than the ones you buy at the darn store anyhow .

I plan on cheating majorly on this tank because I've got to get those cichlids away from my precious INSANLEY-FREAKED OUT SDs and fast.....

I'm gonna use the filter off the 29 and ALL the gravel and start up another filter on it as well.........I think I'll be okay adding them after temp is up???

OMG!!! What a horror story! But I'm happy to find out that all ended up good in the end.

The way you plan to go about setting up your new tank should work out perfectly. As long as you are able to keep the gravel covered with tank water until the move, and transfer the filter intact, you will be able to save almost all of the beneficial bacteria in your old tank.

I would suggest, since you will be adding more gravel too, that you put the new in first and then distribute the old gravel over the top. This will keep the good bacteria from being smothered and will give them ready access to the fish wastes too. In a little while they will spread.

Ya, I guess it did work out, although as far as the "homemade" stand goes.....
we are just gonna buy a new one tomorrow. I have both a bag of new moonlight black sand and all of my old blue gravel, which was a LOT , both in the new tank with the filter from the 29 gallon going in it.....I just haven't put any fish in

Do you think it will be okay running with no ammonia until tomorrow?
There is no sense in puting any fish in if I just have to take them out again tomorrow when we drain the tank to switch stands

I wouldn't take a chance on losing any beneficial bacteria in the filter by running it on an empty tank. Why not run it on your big tank while it is holding your fish. It will help that tank out and insure that the bacteria are being fed until you can finish getting your new tank ready to stock.

Then, even if you have lost the bacteria in the gravel, they will reproduce quickly and soon you will be able to add new fish as well as the old ones.

My god something like that happened to me too, however it was my 27 gallon tank, and insted of cracking along the front it crack length ways across the bottom of the tank, my bedroom was under water, when someone had discovered it (My mum because i was at college at the time) the fish only had three inches of water left because it was gushing out, she dashied it, picked my computer off the floor fish, grabbed a bucket and threw it under the tank, then grabbed my net and started fishing out the fish into the bucket as well, and grabbed the heater before that exploded and threw that in the bucket with them, it was a very close call, but the worse was the damage really, my bedroom arpet, well let put it this way, WHAT BEDROOM CARPET! and also the ceiling was bulging down, fearing that my bedroom might join the sitting room, we threw on the central heating and anything lse like portal heater into the sitting room to let the heat riase throw the floor, not let alone moving waround all the bucket that lined the sitting room from the dripping ceiling...

Oh that was a nightmare from hell, but i was shocked, all my fish survived, the only thing is i had to divide them up into different tanks, because all i had now was a 15 gallon and a 2 gallon at the time, thankfully the fish i had were only swordies, neons and SAE's so they were alright to put into smaller tanks, it was three days later until i got my hands on another 27 gallon

First time i bought the 27 gallon it cost me £31.99 this time it cost me £55.00 which really did annoy me, but i havd no choice but to buy it in the end... Sadly unlike you i couldnt get a refund because the warrenty does not cover cracks which i think is darn right outragous because whats the point to the warrenty!

Man, it sounds like you almost lost your entire floor! We caught ours pretty quick which is really good.

I guess recarpeting your house is always a possibility with us fish keepers!
