my last tank had sand and i think i would like to go back to sand whats the main opinion sand gravel

i think that sand is better to plant in, its much easier, however if you are doing EI or el natural then i would use gravel, as it lets waste fall down to roots where plants can use it, whereas sand just sits on top

i would use tropica planting substrate from aqua essentials and then cap it with play sand- argos

hmmm... sand has a high calcium level and is primarily used in cichlid tanks to increase the ph to the correct level of around 8.0 - 8.2

i would be careful... you may find that you will be fighting a loosing battle regarding the ph levels...

but it looks like you only have cichlid so i think you should be fine :)

sand looks good :p

you are thinking of coral sand.

I dont see a particular problem with using sand as i used it in my last tank but i just wondered how you guys got on with the benifits or not of sand over gravel I think that i preferred the sand as it was easier to clean but withe the bottom dwellers digging around so much i am using gravel as a means to stop the plants being dug up so much
