had a question about the best way to prune elodea with the intention of getting more plants. I basically bought a couple and wanted to multiply the lot and fill out the tank some. It grows so fast, it seemed like a waste to buy a ton of them.

I've noticed that if I trim off the top portion and replant it, that part seems to grow fine. The lower portion hasn't seemed to do much though. Is this normal? Does the "parent" not really grow much then or not produce any new growth?

If it produces branches/sideshoots is it best to trim them off near their base off the main stem?

if you leave it to grow long enough you will get long side chutes, you dont really want to cut off the main section of the top stem unless you need to shorten the plant, chop off the side chutes right at the base but so as you dont cut the main plant stem, if they have a root at the stem try and keep it intact but sometimes its impossible, you want to get the ones that are long enough to bunch up basically, lead them wait for it to grow some more and repeat. :p
