Moving fish in cold weather.

Where I live it's been under 30 degrees Fairenheit lately. I've been afraid to buy my next set of fish b/c I don't want to freeze them!

Should I wait for spring or is there something I can do to bring them safely home? They'd have about a 25 minute ride from the LFS to my house.

Currently I have:

4 Zebra Danios
2 Serpae Tetras
And numerious snails that came with the live plant from the other LFS I'm never going to again.

I'd like to add more serpae. And I need something else. Suggestions?

I think if you take a styrofoam cooler with you and put the fish in there before you go outside they should be fine.

More Serpae would be good. What about a little bit bigger fish...dwarf gourami...well, wait what size tank do you have?

All you need is a thermally-lined cooler/lunch box/styrofoam box and a heat-pack (sold as hand warmers at places like Home Depot and gas stations) Just be sure not to let the heat pack touch the bags the fish are in. You can tape it to the lid.

Are you riding a bike? Heater out in the car?
I would think if they were in a heated car it would be O.K.. The car would be warm from the 25 minute drive to the LFS.

A cooler or styrofoam box (FWG idea) would not hurt, or Exileds idea would obviouslly be good.

Below 30 back in Columbus? Heh, out here it's been below zero for a week.

Anyway, I use a soft-sided thermal tote, like the kind you pack lunches in. A foam cooler would work as well. Just try to use something that can be fairly well sealed -- if it is, the air inside will make an excellent insulator.

Also, if you don't want to go to the trouble of getting a heat pack, you could also just stop at a fast-food place, and plop a burger or fries or something in the cooler.

I hadn't thought of the styrofoam container! But sounds like a great idea!
