I will be moving a ~30 gal tank soon and want some advice on the best way to accomplish this.

Should I take water out, but leave fish in tank or take fish out as well and put in other containers?

Thanks

Take the fish out and take out as much of the water as you can and store it in buckets, then when its setup again fill the tank up wit hthe buckets and put the fish back in?? hope i helped ;)

Take as much water out as you feel its safe for the fish remaining within the tank. You don't want to stress the fish out by fishing them out, and later putting them back in. :D

Wait, are you moving them in the car or somewhere else in the house? if you are moving them in the house then what kribsinvcrib is fine but if they are going in a van or something i would take the fish out :)

Yes, I will be moving them in the car. I figured that if they were left in the tank they would get sloshed around too much like you said.

I'm just not sure how much water to take out, because the tank is fairly heavy and will crack if too much weight is left in while picking it up.

Looks like I'll have to invest in some new 5 gal buckets. I'll probably put the fish in plastic bags separated by species. I have 12 guppies, 7 neons, 5 platys, and 2 catfish.

Fish don't like being caught, handled by anyone, and breathing surface air. If the the relocation is within the home, leaving them in comfortable surroundings they know, is much better for them. :D

Tanks are designed to be moved while they are empty. They are really only structurally stable when in a level position with the bottom perimeter evenly supported. Just twisting them a bit, even when empty can cause a seam to leak or worse. Water or gravel makes twising it that much easier.

If you don't want to net them for the move to a transportation container, get a suitable size glass jar, submerse it with some food in it, and wait for a bit.

I agree with Tolak, I've had tanks break while in transit before. I would remove as much water as possible. When I moved from ND to MN it was about 700 miles, I put the fish in 1 gallon buckets and used an battery powered pump. I also added Methylene Blue to the water.

Depending on the size of the fish, try coolers with a portable air stone (runs on batteries). The when you get to the destination you can plug in a heater (depending on temp). I did this about 4 years ago and my fish lived in a cooler for a couple of days. You although really need an air stone to keep some water movement. Worked for me! ;)
