I have been a "hands-on" active member of my department (in the mining industry) for 40 years (on January 4th 2011).....

Today, I got told by management that I'm being withdrawn (from active) to do office duties (only) to (exclusively) do the design and future environmental planning of a new mine they're planning (64 Billion rand project for the next 30 years)......

I'm still not sure of how to interpret this anticipated move..... Slap in the face!?, or confidence in my experience??.... I'll be sitting in front of a computer for the rest of my (in)active career doing simulations and modelling..... boring prospects, but a trillion times less stressful......

And so much better for your lungs! I don't know, I'm only see the positives in this right now. More time in front of the computer is a good thing... :hyper: That's so cool that you'll be instrumental in the design of a mine. Your wife will worry less about accidents... See, all positives...

I think that's a congratulations but the biggest test will be at pay review time. Congratulations on doing such a long stint in the same company, what minerals are you mining mostly?

I started off in gold (for 17 years) then moved over to Diamond mining (for 13 years) and have been in Platinum mining now for the past 10 years..... (also left the mining industry for about 3 years when I had my own pub & restuarant)..... I'm doing Environmental Control for the Mining industry. (Occupational health aspects etc.)

Why does this statement not surprise me in the least? :) :drinks:

I agree with the others, I think it's a good thing! Although the pay could be a sticking point...then again, design work pays heavily I think.

Thats a good point - you can't put an aquarium in a mine... ;)
