Moved To Marine - Yay

I had a vision 180 so its a very similar design. I kept my internal filter in the tank to help with flow. I removed the internal chambers though and just added some small lumps of liverock. This became a small "cryptic zone! where pods, sponges and squirts would grow in darlkness and safety. These all help with filtration and polishing of water.

As for adding the internal to the flow.. what i did was to try and aim for 1800 turn over without the external filter i was using and the internal filter fitted being part od the equasion. Thus i knew that i had far mor ethan the 10x min spec for the tank.

Sorry Ben, dont agree on this one, I wouldnt add any Bio media to your External, I would just let your Live Rock do what you pay a good amount for.

Don't disagree with me if you aren't going to give any reason as to why not to use it...... *sigh*

IF he has an external filter he may aswell use it, and the biomedia will certainly help as the tank starts to mature. You will also find that sponges as well as your bacteria and small pods will grow in the external filter and WILL help.

Sure, if he didnt have an external filter there is no need for it, but if he has it he may aswell use it, as its certainly not doing any harm.

Ben

I aint saying not to use the External at all, I am simply advising noy to use it for Biological Filtration as IMO they are a PITA, if Pete is using the appropriate amount of LR (CURED) & stock slowly & sensibly then his LR will take care of the Biological needs without having to involve the external.

I am a bit fan of Live Rock (as some may have quessed) and I personally think that using Externals/Inetrnals Filter with Bio Media is a thing of the past

JMHO

:)

I got some live rock today, but the LFS didnt that that much of it, so ive only got abour 4kg in there at the mo, i will order some online in the next few days, i see there is lots of different live rock, what do you suggest, whats the difference between it all?!

Pete

The main difference is where it is gathered Pete

IMO most reefers use Fijian LR.

There are a few different types of LR in the PM I sent ya

There is the option to go for Base Rock & the more expensive Fijian Premium on top, but this may limit your aquascaping options but will save you some cash

Reef Bones are another option - these are simply uncured dry natural reef rock, very porus & light, but most places only sell in box's of 40lbs at around £120.00

:)

I considered going for base rock to save some dosh although after reading all this i think its best for my future fish to use all LR. I am having the same trouble getting it due to limited amounts of it at my LFS, so im considering ordering it online- however the postage aint cheap, damn heavyness of rock! One of my LFS doesn't even sell it- its a joke seeing as i thought they were the better FS around here  . Im using my internal filter that came with my juwel although from what people have said, is it best to take out the sponges?

i started reading that post thinking i never wrote that, what the hell, then i realized you must still have it signed on!
