Loboto-Me
Fish Crazy
Well I thought I'd give you guys an update on Tatsumi's adventure.
As some of you know, I had been talking about a big cross country move for a few months.
I finally got my internet last night (been here for about a week now) and I'm very releived to have the internet to play with in between unpacking boxes ect.
Well, onward to Tatsumi's trip. First I bought a plastic container from Dollarama which held about 1/2 L of liquid. I then stole some well conditioned aqurarium water from my MIL's tank. I filled the plastic container to almost full and omitted any kind of stones ect.
For extra safety, I put his makeshift tank inside a small garbage can and he was kept safe in the front with us.
The first day we drove all day and in the evening, decided to stop at a motel for the night. I figured Tatsumi would be fine in his little home, inside the van with the cat and the hampster (yeah a regular menagerie travelling with us )
The next morning I went and and checked up on the animals in the van and poor tatsumi was very listless. I though I had lost him for sure! He was moving, and was half laying on the bottom of the container. He wouldn't come up for food either. My husband, seeing my face, was sure I had lost my little tank puppy. I beleive the temperature must have dipped a bit too low for Tatsumi's comfort.
We turned on the heat in the van, and I put his container between my legs to warm his water. I then turned on the heated seat to help warm him up. After about 1/2 hr he was upright and swimming up and down for extra air. From then on Tatsumi shared the motel rooms with us.
The container was pretty air tight as not to spill him onto the floor of the van if we had a mishap. I would open up his container to freshen his air every few hours or so while driving, and would leave off the lid in the motel room.
I also noticed that he seemed a tad depressed though. Travelling long distance is not enjoyable for a fish who is used to having his bubbler, and lots of light around him at all times. I would lift him out of the garbage can every once in while to talk to him and he'd be much happier once the sunlight hit his container. From then on I'd give him a sunlight tonic by putting him on the top of the dashboard so he could soak up some sun.... that seemed to lift his spirits alot.
After 5 days of travel (yes we took our time) the water was pretty filthy. As soon as we got to our new home, I cleaned his regular tank (which we had packed inside the van with us) and within a few days, he had fresh new water and his old home back.
I'm happy to say, he's a happy fellow once again And so am I
