Hello everyone,

I am just curious, I have a cory catfish thats aprox 2.5'. I was wondering if it would be ok if I moved him from one of my tanks into a 15 gallon fry tank that I have. The fry tank has a bare bottom, and there is lots fo stuff for him to nibble on in there. Would he bother or eat any of my guppy fry? They are about 5 days old but still very tiny and would eadily fit in is mouth.

Thanks,
Colen.

I figured he probably would. I just removed him from a 35 gallon tank that has 17 barbs into a 55 gallon that has a dozen platties, and he seems much happier already. When the barbs got bored they would chase him out of his hiding spots, they would spend most of there day searching for him!

No he is not by himself and he never has been. He was in a 35 gallon that is stocked with barbs and they bother him, so I considerd moving him into a 15 gallon tank that is full of fry, however I decided that was not a good idea, he is now in a 55 gallon with some platties. If you mean hes by himself because he has no other corys? Well thats not a problem, beacuse he has lived with pleco's all his life, and hangs our in the clay pots with them! Its funny to watch, he follows them around, eats their food, etc. For a few hours everyday my one 8' pleco comes and sits on top of the clay pot, and the cat fish joins him! lol he is so odd...

He seems happy though, and soon I will have some yoyo locahes to join him in the 55.

you do know corys swim in schools in the wild right? i have 13 cories and i feel they need even more friends..

Hi ccg :)

Corys are schooling fish and yours does need a couple of friends. And, when the time comes that you are ready to try breeding an egglaying fish, corys are excellent ones to begin with. They are usually still young when they are sold by the lfs, so keep that in mind and plan ahead.

Corys do not "hunt," so to speak. They just look on the ground for food that is laying there or is hidden in the gravel. He will not chase them or attempt to catch the fry while they are swimming above him. If they are laying on the ground, however, there is no way for him to know that they aren't food.

:D

I keep corys in my fry tanks with swordtail fry. I haven't had any mysterious fry disappearances. My little guys tend to get out of the way if a cory is cruising towards them. I've never seen any of my corys intentionally go after a fry but as others pointed out, if the fry were laying in the gravel and didn't bother to get up and out of the way it might end up as a meal.

I keep a panda cory in with 1 day old angel fry. Never bothers the tiny angels, and keeps bbs off the bottom of the tank. The cory goes back in with the rest of his buddies after 2-3 weeks, when the angels go into a larger tank.
