Mouth rot?

One of my bettas has mouth rot, I think. I searched on Google and just read through recent posts on the topic and it seems pretty hopeless.

His lips look huge and kinda waxy. And he's got a fuzzy looking spot in between his eyes that's raised like a bump (a little pineconey looking). But nothing anywhere else on his body, except his finrot is coming back.

He's hanging out at the water surface, not moving around much at all. His gills aren't moving much either.

He's in a 5 gallon tank, ammonia 0, nitrite 0. I don't have a nitrate test, so don't know about that level. I did a 50% water change and added Jungle fungus clear. It's only med I have that listed mouth rot on the box. I also did a salt dip in hopes that it would help. He was a little more lively after the dip, but now he's back to being quite lethargic. He ate a couple bloodworms last night, that's when I noticed it. But he won't eat today.

Help please, he looks awful!
Thanks, Erin

P.S. What about M1 and M2 combined? All I have is M2 right now, but I could get the other.

The fungus clear should help it if it's a fungus, but you will need something else for the finrot. Treat the fungus first, then go for the finrot. You can use the salt bath in the meantime as well..it might be enough for the finrot. When checking your parameters, ph, ammonia , etc...make sure you do it right before you do a water change..thats when it's at it's worst.

Thanks, F250. Yeah that's when I do it. Sometimes, I even check the params after I change the water, just to check.

But I thought mouth rot or columnaris was actually a bacterial infection? And just called a fungus because of it's apperrance? Not sure, but that's what I thought anyway.

I hope the fungus clear helps! He looks like he's got popeye now, too. He looks totally awful right now! I'm not sure what to do next!

Thanks again, Erin

Well..you said it was a fungus, and I said if it was..the fungus clear should work. If it is Columnaris, then it is Bacterial..and will need a different med. Your fish is really stressed, to get columnaris, finrot, and possible popeye at the same time. If you are keeping the water clean..then you have some kind of bad issue going on.

Treatment: There are a number of effective treatments for many strains of bacterial infections. Three of the most common are tetracycline, penicillin and naladixic acid. Salt baths are another effective treatment.

Good luck.

Keep his water extra clean till it's well. After that..since you are so practised up..
Keep it up..lol
You can't get a bettas water too clean. It can be too sterile..but not too clean.

I'm not "practiced up" by far. If I was, I wouldn't have asked the question in the first place! The fungus/bacteria thing was because I was unclear which this is.

I added a heater to his tank about a week and a half ago. One of those junior heaters without a thermostat. It raised his temp too high, too quick. Maybe that helped contribute to my problems I have here. :dunno: I'm not using the heater anymore.

Anyway, I appreciate the help.
Thanks, Erin

(and yes that was me on the other board with this question. if it's a no-no, i appologize :*) . just looking for all the help i can get)
