Mouth Fungus?

Hi,

Some of you may know that I got new fish be accident yesterday. Among these were 2 chromidotilapia finleyi/Benitochromis nigrodorsalis cichlids. I put them in my tank and they have been acting ok but the male appears to have white patches around his mouth. 2 small patches and a sort of hangy bit when seen side-on.

I have looked up Mouth Fungus which I understand is actually bacterial, not fungal. What I am worried about is whether is is mouth fungus or normal fungus that is near the mouth by coincedence. I know that a key factor is water quatily and stress and that a lot of fish are brought in with it. I am about to check the water parameters but they were all fine last week when I last checked. So I think if wither it will be a stress related problem from the recent journey here.

I am not sure if he ate yesterday but I will try feeding a little and report back. He seems ok but a bit quiet. I don't know cichlids too well to see what they should be acting like but I can compare with the other one which is much more active and less shy. I have seen him scratching his head off a plant-pot in the tank but no other fish have done this and there are no signs of ich. His lips are also a lit lighter than the female's if that is of relevance.

Details of my tank:

Dimensions: 60" x 18" x 18"
Filters: 2 Eheim Ecco 2233 (I think) externals
Last parameters: 0 amonia, 0 nitrIte, 10 nitrAte, ph 7.2
Fish and volume in my sigmnature.

I understand I have a lot of fish in my tank but as you can see all the parameters are great and there are plenty of hiding spaces. I personally wouldn't have added any more fish but I really had no choice when they were delivered to me rather than the 4 peppered cories I was expecting for my coldwater tank!

If he comes near the front I will try and get a pic but it is quite hard to see without a camera, never mind with!

Thanks for any help.

Well,

I have tested the parameters and fed the fish. The cichlid ate without trouble which is good, so I don't think it's impairing him yet.

The parameters have changed a bit, now:

Amonia: 0
NitrIte: 0
NitrAte: 20
Ph: 7.6 (tested as 7.4 using 'high range' kit  )

I am going to try for a photo now.

You've done some good research to know that mouth fungus is bacterial :)
If it's mouth fungus, then treat with anti-bacterial meds like Melafix and the lot ASAP, prefferably in a hospital tank for full effect. Mouth fungus is incurable if not treated after a certain point. I had a swordtail die from it and it was the nastiest death I have seen thus far.

Good Luck Miss Cheese

Well, I have treated with Interpet fungus and fin rot treatment as it will cure either fungus or mouth rot/fungus and not harm the filter or plants. I treated the whole tank as I didn't want to take him out and stress him more.

He looks good today, no worse and maybe a little better. Sorry about not getting a pic I just couldn't get one!

 When will they learn to KEEP STILL?!!

I just realised when posting in the picture forum that have a pic of the fungus taken when I didn't know it was there.

I don't know how well you can see it but it should how small it actually is and where. It's on the top lip on the right of his mouth...

Mouth fungus (bacterial) tends to be black or dark grey, while a regular fungus, which can grow on the mouth, is white and fluffy.

Thanks for the info, the meds I used will treat in either case.

Should be ok. :)
