I see adandrews is running a thread on Congos...... In my opinion, they are the most under rated fish commercially available.... They do not get the credit they deserve. Congos are beautiful.... relatively peaceful,... good community members.... active...... top, middle and at times bottom dwellers.... They should be in everyones' tanks.....

In your opinion, what is the most under rated fish???

i agree. people are always saying how annoying they can be but imo ive had no problems at all when i ve kept them the only problem is the price tag. personnally i love them

I have 8 of them (although for their own safety Im trying to re-home them) and they are beautiful fish, little nippy but only with each other, I have a dominant male, very pricey too, but one of the best tetras IMO.

There are plenty of fish that are under rated. Ruby Barbs, gold, checkered & cherry barbs are always available but no one buys them. Instead people buy tiger barbs and they chew hell out of the other fish's fins. There are also some great labyrinth fishes available including honey dwarf gourami, licorice, sparkling, croaking and chocolate gouramis, although chocolates can be a bit hard to keep. Betta imbellis and pugnax are great fishes too. B. imbellis can be kept in groups and although the males show off to each other, they don't try to kill one another like the common B. splendens (Siamese fighter). And B. pugnax grows to a nice size and carries its eggs in its mouth. A labyrinth that breeds like an African cichlid, how cool is that.

most underrated fish in my opinion is the Mayan cichlid. sure they dont get as big as the festae, or arent as colourful, but mine is the most aggresive fish ive ever seen. more than the 14" jag i used to own. has to be kept on his lonesome and one hell of a personable fish.

as for the congos i wanted some for ages now but they are about 10£ a fish here if you are lucky

Keyhole cichlids. They've got the big cichlid look and personality in a smallish, community-friendly package. Good bit bigger than rams or apistos, and while they're not stunning fish, they have the ability to drastically change their color in moments.

There was a thread like this a while back where somebody actually suggested fancy goldfish are underrated. It sounds bass-ackwards, but their logic actually made sense: Most people who buy them aren't prepared for their potential size and lifespan, and most people who are prepared to properly house them instead go for other big fish like cichlids or knifes.

i have cherry barbs!:look:
they are the best looking fish in my tank (apart from my rams lol)
great fish!

nice but in my area they are never in. so when someone gets them in the price is always high,.
for instance flowerhorns are unheard of, and bloodparrots are very rare not to mention discus. whenver they are in there stupidly priced,.
theres at least 5 good LFS near me too.

In my mind the most underrated fish are the goodeids. They are generally not kept in the local fish stores because they are not very popular. Many people have never seen one. Right now I have 3 different species of goodeids and they are all very nice fish with lots of personality, but all of them were obtained from club auctions because there is no fish store that I know of that carries them. 2 of the 3 that I have are also considered endangered or are extinct in the wild but there is no reason not to have them and try to help preserve the species. The one I have that is extinct in the wild is Ameca Splendens, also called butterly goodeid. It is a beautiful fish that is easy to care for and loves to interact with me as if it were a typical cichlid. The 6 that I started with a few months ago are now about 15 because they are quite prolific and do not eat their own fry. They have a 60 day gestation period so they don't overpopulate as fast as some livebearers. The extinct in the wild status is due to habitat destruction, not due to any particular vulnerability of the fish. The only thing that is a bit unusual about their care is that I have very strong currents in their tank so they have a place to do some strong swimming without reaching the end of the tank. They are strong swimmers and appreciate the currents.
