"No one is a failure unless you try"
Oh God.... The filter on my Betta albimarginata tank started rattling a bit last night, so today I decided to replace the impeller (luckily I have a ton of the same model of filter that I'm not currently using to steal parts from.) I replaced it without noticing anything unusual and silence was restored. Everything was going great until I examined the old impeller to see what the problem was; wrapped just above the blades was an unidentifiable... thing. I delicately moved the blades and this item would stop their rotation so at first I thought it was something hard, but then I touched it -- EW, definitely flesh.
It was one of my poor little Betta imbellis.
I have no idea how it got in there as the intake is covered with mesh (we had fry recently,) the filter had a lid, and the output is almost completely obstructed by a bit of coke bottle being used as a current blocker. It must have had a death with is all I can say. Only when I began trying to remove it from the impeller was I able to see a tiny bit of fin attached to the flesh. Worse still, I was unable to easily tear it off the impeller and ended up having to "untie" it instead, as the piece in the middle was extremely hard and had been reduced to the thickness of a bit of string
