I bought one of those "Ultimate Guide to fishkeeping" books at a local borders bookstore recently. It's been pretty helpful with pH and, hardness, and water changes and all. But I saw a little tip in the food section that really helped.
Using mosquito larvae as food.
I made a synthetic stagnant water source that made 50 or so larvae, and it's been cropping them out since.
They are a treat for the betta and I've yet to see one hit the bottom of his tank.
I just put McDonalds Sweet Tea styrofoam cup out, put some cycled aquarium water and algae in it. Let it go stagnant and watch the little squirmies start to appear.
