Mosquito Larvae

while i'm waiting for the conditioning of my betta, im feeding them bloodworms and betta pellets but today i found literally hundreds of mosquito larvae in an old plant pot in my backyard. Are they good for bettas?? COnditioning???

Lugo - Your not really taking on board what people are saying! You're not set up for keeping the 2 bettas you've got, let alone spawning with them!

You're not really gonna get too much help if you continue to spawn with them, as all other advice is being ignored.

The male and female NEED their own, indoor, 2 gal tanks. Heated if required.

I suggest you do some research as IMO you are rushing headlong into disaster. Ourselves, and many others that breed, spent months researching before spawning, and even then things can go wrong.

You owe it to your bettas.

There's nothing wrong with asking questions. It's just that it comes across that you are desperate to breed as quickly as possible despite the advice you've been given to research breeding and to get together the necessary equipment that you will need before you start. You've only had these guys for a week and you're not giving them nearly enough time to settle and recover from your first attempt. I've also got my doubts as to whether your female is actually a female but it's difficult to tell with the amount of fin damage.

By all means keep asking questions here and do your research etc. but please don't try to spawn them until you and the fish are ready

I have gotten every single betta tank I own for free....go search yard sales and such for cheap tanks, put a post up on craigs list just asking for free tanks...you would be suprized...I got a 20 long, 2-10s, 2-5s, and 2-2s for free just by asking on craigs list. many people have old tanks sitting around in the basement or garage that they would gladly get rid of.

I have also gotten most of my equipment this way too, filters and such, all just needed a good cleaning. the only thing I have paid for is heaters.

also dont be turned off by old or leaking tanks, nearly all can be repaired...just cut off the old silicon with a razor blade and smear a good layer of aquarium safe silicon along it and presto....nice tanks for the cost of silicon.

to buy new I would have had to pay bare bones 250 dollars for my tanks and filters, and I got it all for free and saved my money for nice fish and food.

Mozzie larvae are one of the best foods for conditioning any fish. Just put them into a fine mesh net and let some tap water run over them for a minute. Then pop them into the tank. Don't put too many in at once otherwise they might not get eaten and in the warm water of a tropical tank they will develop faster and could turn into adult mozzies.

wish i could have some mozzie larvae outside my door, would save a packet on importing them, oh well such is life.

Why don't you just accidentally grow some? Have a container of water outside under a tree and put some grass or lettuce leaves in it. A few weeks later you will have them.
*NB* it is illegal to culture mozzies in some parts of the world
