Can any one give me ideas on how to improve the look of the tank

maybe some larger plants up the back? i dunno. it looks pretty good to me!

That looks beautiful You could add taller, bushier plants on the left to hide the filter.

It's a really nice tank!!!
I would go with what Dubby and -cAtFiSh- said. More plants in the back and to the left of the filter would make it look good.

id really like to try and hide the filter a bit and also give the tank a bit more depth

Why not try some taller backgrounds plants like Vallisneria or Limnophila.
