I had this conversation at work yesterday.

Customer: Are these all male bettas?
Me: *hoping that she asked because she's actually interested in getting a female* Yes, but we do have some females in this tank over here. That one, that one, and then here's one that I actually bred...
Customer: Those are bettas?!
Me: Yes, they're females.
Customer: OH. Well, I guess we're getting a male then! (this was said in a "who would ever be crazy enough to buy one of those ugly fish" sort of tone)

They were really pretty females, too! :-(

how ruuude.....i think some girls are VERY pretty.....we don't get pretty girls down here though :( just bog standard, all the same colour girls.....I love the paler girls with irridescent fins :)

I had similar "Ugly female betta" convos when I worked at walmart. I cant understand how people can think the girls are ugly, they have the cutest faces!!! and so much personality

I got my female when she was tiny and not very pretty but she blossomed into the beautiful girl she is. I think girls are very expressive and have lots of attitude and personality.

lindsey your female looks just like my first ever betta mercury I mean like exactly, she was the best fish i ever had, let me see if I can find a picture of her somewhere!

Wow they do look just alike! When I got mine she was only an inch long. She was pale and pitiful floating in dirty shallow water at walmart. My dad made fun of me for buying such an "ugly" betta. She is now so pretty and has lots of attitude. She jumps 2 inches out of the water before I can even drop her pellets in. lol

 i got the exact same attude from the girl serving me at pets at home this morning:lol: i was pointing out the differance between the pk males and the females and she was like "id never want the females, flamin ugly things so they are"

That's so aweful.
The females are just as pretty as the males!
Sure they don't have the huge finnage, but their colors are just as impressive! Poor girls not getting the respect they deserve!

Would you like to have a giant piece of gold, or a small piece, even if it were worth 10x's more?

Same basic principle...ish

I guess you're right- and I also overhear a lot of people saying that they don't want a certain male betta just because he's "too small". It's not like fish grow or anything.

personaly I dont understand why...unless planning to breed, anyone wants to keep a male betta. I know they look great and all, but put some nice looking girls together for a sorority in a good size well put together tank and I think they would be much more fun to look at. (provided they all got along and nobody was ripping each other to bits) I mean if bettas truely need more then just a little cup to live in and I am going to the effort to put together a 10 gallon or more tank, Id rather have the girls.

alot of people buy males for their "ornamental value" which is fine as long as they are looked after properly. id love to have a 1gal jar on every available space in my room with a purty boy in it!

I can see that point if you want to care for many little tanks...or just one little tank. I just cant keep tanks that would be real easy for my 1 year old to topple.

What I have seen is that many people want the male bettas because of their 'majestic' fins. Like a show piece.
It's a plus when they are told that the male betta can be kept in a tiny bowl..no heat or filter with infrequent water changes. People think that this is great! I can give it to my kid and even he can't kill it. Or I can put in on the corner of my desk at work and not worry about it! WHoopee! Not nice at all, I hope everyone would agree with me. It's like having a child and rarely changing its diaper or putting him in a crib all day with the tv on and thinking its enough. Impulsive buying without the planning and plain ole' ignorance. Anywho..when I was at college I knew someone who actually kept the betta in the cup he purchased it in and never changed the water. It was like a swamp! After around 6 months he went home for the weekend and I had my chance... :shifty: !
I crept into his dorm room and stole the betta and gave him to some one. He had his very own 5.5 gallon home and was lovin' it! The guy never found out what happened to his fish needless to say and thank God didn't get a new one..

oh..and yes the females are so sweet.
Each fish should be appreciated for it's own individual beauty..like all things

Thats something I would say. I don't think female bettas are ugly but I just prefer the males over females. I know for a fact though that female bettas are very fast and energetic, I guess you can say.. Spunky.
