Hi all,

I know that there have been topics on Mopani wood but the answers given either confused me (easily done) or didn't really answer my question.

Unfortunately, I put the piece of wood straight in my tank without soaking or anything. I am doing a fishless cycle so there are no people in my tank but now the tanin is leaching out and made the water brown and cloudy and I really want a nice clear tank.

I have a Juwel internal filter which came with the tank which says this "Internal Filter system: This highly efficient and easy to maintain filter system is as complete as it can be, equipped with a powerful pump and all filter media in the most practical filter basket: - Poly Pads for the large dirt particles - Active Carbon Sponge to extract chemical impurities from the water - coarse and fine filter sponges housing the bacteria cultures to effectively clean the water."

My question is, therefore, will the filter system eventually clean the water or when my cycling is complete and I do a large water change, will that sort out the problem?

Thanks in advance. :good:

If memory serves, the stock Juwel Filters dont have Carbon so no itll always be brown, but the cloudyness is nothing to do with the wood, that will be from the cycle. Just leave it until the cycle completes, dont change anything its fine.

Once the cycle completes then do a massive water change, once the tank has been running for a month with some fish add carbon to the tank, that will strip out some of the tannin, but it will take months to properly clear...and you will need to change the carbon on regualr intervals. But tbh tannin is good for the fish, water and kinda looks natrual :)

Thanks for the quick reply. According to the information that came with the tank, filter, etc I am told that the filter contains an active black carbon sponge - is that not the same thing?

In any event, I will leave it all alone and wait for the cycle to complete. Thanks.

This has just happened to me. Its nothing to worry about and I soaked mine for a week. Changing water daily etc and boiling it. Water changes will remove it and when you do your large change it will fine.

But....If your testing your water wont the water give you false readings or doesnt this matter?
Can one of the experienced members answer this?

Its puzzled me for a few days!

As i said i couldnt remember, but yes that sponge is similar, although not as good as active carbon pellets imo. Just leave the tank until its cycled :)

Nope tannin is a natural and wont affect the water tests.

Thanks thats cleared that up then! (no pun) lol

I found with my mopani wood, used in 2 tanks, that it just needed a good scrub and a run under the tap. Then it only browned the water for a week or two. Bogwood is the one that is usually miles worse. I would advise that you leave it for a few weeks. If your water is still brown then think about cold soaking it in a bucket. Boiling can make things worse IMO as it appears to break down the surface of the wood.

boiling did seem to make to make it worse your right.

when it was in cold water and after a week it didnt stain the water. but the water in your fish tank is warm so it leeched.

If i were to get another peice id leave it for about a month.
