Have been looking at getting some bogwood and came across something called mopani bogwood on ebay?

What is it and will it be ok in my tank?

Anyone use it?

Well I've just bought a piece as I thought it looked great and soaking it over the next 3 of 4 weeks gives me something to do daily whilst waiting to set up my tank

Any comments would be good though as I have my eye on another piece...

I've used it in my tank with no issues, it's a lighter colour and more interesting than bogwood IMO, it also leeches fewer tannins after you've soaked it well, or this might just be my experience. Got mine off ebay too :good:

I've got some too> I find it more pleasing on the eye than normal Bogwood and would recommend it to anyone who has the option...usually a bit more costly though.

i have a few big pieces in my tank. It's a little more expensive if you buy it from a LFS (my one piece was $50, which was too much, but i needed it). In my experience, it has not stained my water at all. I only soaked each piece for around a day or so. There was some fungus growth on some other pieces i have, but it wasnt a big deal.

firstly, Mopani isnt Bogwood, its completely different. As stated Mopani is more susceptible to mould than bogwood, or it has been everytime ive tried some.

i got some mould on mine but that only happens during the settling in process, eventually the mould will dissapear, mopani isnt a true bogwood no, it is harvested in africa then buried underground for around 3 to 5 years, then dug up and sold, it is VERY hard though so it can tolerate aquatic enviroments without rotting.

Ive had 2 experiences, 1 leaches tannings after soaking, had a slight mould issue while 'settling in' then was fine. The second I didnt bother soaking, leached absolutly no tannings and sufferd no form of mould atall :) Each piece is different and all safe.

Here are pics of the 2 pieces I've just bought - Well excited!
