I am thinking of adding a moonlight tube to my tank, just to put on for a couple of hours when the other tank lights go out........I would like other peoples views please :)

I do exactly that :D ! Not only does it look great, it gives the fish a more natural "darkening period" rather than "lights out!" and then immediate darkness.

Here is a pic of my community tank with the moonlights on....

Not yet taken a pic of my african tank with them on yet. Will get one taken soon.

The tube has to be fixed to the lid??? can you see the screws??
Sorry goldie...can't help you on that one :/ .

My lights came with internal self stick fittings that I didn't have to screw. I just had to stick the fittings to the inside top of tank and I was sorted.

Take a look at these....

Not exactly the same as mine but very similar.

Hi Goldie,

Like Baldranger i've attached some with sticky pads,
I used cold cathode tubes which are feather light so sticky pads are ideal,
you can hang them in the lid of your juwel tank no probs.

Trust me you will not be dissapointed when you see your tank with them on,
for so little outlay it makes such a difference.

im am now also convinced!!!!

however i have a problem!

my nex tnak is a rekord 120

noe i belive there isn't much scope for fitting extra lighting to these tanks, tho i suppose i could make a nw hood for it?

in fact rather then hijackl the thread i will go and ask in hardware section

No need OTP...the cold cathodes are only about 1cm wide and you can get 4" tubes or 12" tubes. They take up hardly any space at all.

2 x 4" tubes would be good on your 120  .

One thing i will say is that if you want to get the best effect from a moonlight tube buy one that is half the recomended size for your tank, ie; if your tank takes a 36" tube then buy a 18" moonlight tube and fittings. This gives a much more natural effect of moonlight filtering through the water and isnt so bright so even the shyest nocturnal fish will come out.

 no, just a observation from personal experience. The first moonlight tube i bought was a 42" tube for a Rio 300, the first night i had it installed we sat up with it on waiting for the elusive catfish and bichirs to come out, and sat there and sat there. The fish wouldnt come out even with the moonlight tube on until i had wrapped half of it in tinfoil to shade the light so from then on any time i installed a moonlight tube i used one half the size.

:D to be honest I thought it was a bit bright myself  .

When I set my 55 gallon up i actually took one of the moonlights off my community tank (in the post above) and put it on my Mbuna tank (the 55) so i now have one 12" tube on each of my larger tanks rather than two.

Does look much better  .
