I use 2 x 12" cold cathodes from ebay (£10) then twist or connect to an old mobile charger (between 5V and 12V) and voila (Thes tubes are 3 years old and still work)

This is a bad image really poor camera makes it look much bluer where in reality its a clearer blue white almost actinic. this is runing off a 12V adaptor in this picture.

So there you go £10(ish) for the kit. zero for the old phone charger and £1 for some superglue to mount the cathodes.

Awesome light rig, Supercoley - thanks for posting the pictures! I'm awaiting my bare LEDs and a resistor to arrive in the mail any day now. Then I will get to rigging up my own light string.
